She was born in Seminole, OK but spent her childhood and teenage years being raised in virtual poverty in the rural Ozarks of Arkansas. She worked a number of years as a secretary for the former National Steel Corporations Houston division. She then went into banking and was fortunate to find security working for a bank owned by the late Michael Halbouty. At Northside Bank under the guidance of President O.O. “Buddy” Hare she flourished and was promoted to a vice presidency of the bank at a time when few women served as bank officers. She was a mentor to many young men and women who now work in banking and business.
She met her husband of 50 years, Ernest Johnson, while he was on active duty with the U. S. Air Force running the NCO club at Carswell AFB. Theirs was a marriage meant to be. After his death she found companionship with good friend Lester Hoffmeister. Ernest and Norma had two children.
She is survived by her oldest son, Jerry of Austin, Texas, son, Gary Mike and his wife Laura of Arlington, Texas; her beloved grandchildren, Katie Carter and Julie Anne Johnson.
Norma, God saw you getting weary, and he did what he thought best he put his arms around you and said come and rest. He opened up his golden gates on that heartbreaking day, and with his arms around you gently let you slip away. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone. A part of each of us went with you the day God called you home.
She reunited in burial with her husband, Ernest at the Houston National Cemetery, and funeral services was conducted by Pastor Stephen Sohns of Resurrection Lutheran Church.
If you are reading this now, and wondering why you weren’t told then it’s because you never called or visited as she was growing old.
Praise God for your life, and blessings Norma. Bye Mama!!!!
