The only baby girl born to James and Odessa (Carroll) Jackson on August 28, 1938, Dorothy was often celebrated being the only sister to 8 brothers. She accepted Christ at the tender age of 12 and joined the Allen Ave Church of God in Christ. She was educated in the Jackson Public School system, graduating from Merry High School.
She later met and married the love of her life, William David Coleman and for 52 years they enjoyed marital bliss. To this union 9 children were born, 5 boys and 4 girls all reared in love and given the foundation “That only what you do for Christ will last”. Dorothy worked and retired from Parks Belk, however her first love was giving God praise. She used her voice as an instrument to glorify God and was affectionately known as the Songbird of the South. As a teenager, she was offered the opportunity to utilize her talent by singing along with Dorothy Norwood. Dorothy's vocal and God-given talent allowed her to bless many near and far with her melodious sound. She went on to record as a lead singer with the Ohio Jurisdictional Choir. It was evident that her love for God made room for her in the body of Christ, serving as Church Mother, providing spiritual guidance and wisdom under the leadership of Pastor Ozell Northern. She served with her husband in ministry as the First Lady of Harvest Time COGIC. Elevation was certainly on Dorothy’s life as she was appointed YPWW Chairlady of the Central Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction and then later became the District Missionary for the Parsons District, serving under Supt Joseph Fisher. Her life’s theme, ‘If I can help somebody as I travel along the way, then my living will not be in vain”. In Dorothy’s latter years, she attended Hosanna Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas, where she told everyone, she met, “my Son-in-law is the Pastor”.
