Althea was a very private, but caring person. Her love for people and her acts of kindness were reflected in her career choice of Nursing. She began her career in Trinidad and later migrated to the United States in 1968. After attending City Tech College in New York, she began working at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, NY.
On September 2, 1972, she married Kester James and had two beautiful daughters, Marisa and Danielle. They later moved to Spring, Texas in 1980 where she worked as a nurse at Houston Northwest Medical Center in Houston, Texas until her retirement in 2008.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Kester, daughters Marisa and Danielle, son-in-law Adam and as “Mimi” to grandsons, Dane and Dylan. Her siblings Marjorie (deceased), Cynthia, Churchill, Carlisle, Cecil and Avril. Her nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, extended family members, and friends.
Little known facts about Althea: she was a member of Nichiren Buddhism for Daily Life, SGI-USA. She played Field Hockey and Netball in her younger days in Trinidad. She had a bit of a sweet tooth; the soft serve ice cream at Jason’s Deli was required eating, and she always made sure to visit the dessert bar at Sweet Tomatoes. Singing along to the latest top 40 pop songs in her car was a must for Althea. And of course she loved to dance whenever the mood would strike her. She loved shopping, and Macy’s was like her second home, where she always had to visit the perfume and jewelry counters.
Althea enjoyed a good laugh and was an active participant in her family’s life. She will be greatly missed.
