Jean, known as Arlene by her family, was a person who was full of life and enthusiasm. She greeted the world on October 15, 1948 as the first born of her parents Robert A. Hayes and Jeanette J. Seigle. Looking at her baby photos, her eyes were always wide open, wanting to take in everything and greet it with the smile of an adventurer. She was a person of many joys and passions, not just liking what she liked, but loving it and wanting to share her enthusiasm with everyone. She was a good student who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and hoped to be a teacher. When she discovered rock hunting and jewelry making, she was side-tracked for a time, first working with a local jeweler and later having her own jewelry business.
She began teaching at the Modesto Junior College Community Services classes. She taught cutting and polishing stones, jewelry making, and pearl stringing for decades. She loved her students and they became her good friends and a second family for her.
Arlene never met anyone she did not want to know and befriend. When our grandmother, Mrs. Jeanette Y. Seigle, was in a local nursing home, Arlene and our mother, attended church services there for years. After our grandmother passed away, they continued attending those services and would go early to help bring others at the nursing home to the services. She continued attending church services there for the rest of her life.
After two bad falls, breaking both her right shoulder and her right leg, she was called home to be with the Lord on April 11; one moment here, and the next in Heaven. We will all miss her until we meet again. She is preceded in death by her parents Robert A. Hayes and Jeanette J. Seigle and a brother-in-law, Stan Doub.
