James A. McManus, 74, died in his Modesto, CA home on December 15, 2017, due to complications following lung cancer. A veteran of the Vietnam war, he made his career serving in the United States Army for 26 years and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Soldier's medal, and countless honors throughout his military service. In 1987 he retired from the Army in Lawton, Oklahoma and entered into civilian life working for Sam's Club and retired again in 2005. During his tenure at Sam's Club he gained recognition for his leadership and collaboration with his team. He became known as MAC to everyone.
James was born on February 11, 1943 in Follansbee, WV to Grace Gray and Freeman McManus (Father, Leonard Woods). He was a brave and loyal soldier who loved his country, family and close friends. James met his wife of 48 years, Yong Kim in September 1964 while stationed in Korea. They married in 1969 and returned to the United States in 1970.
He is survived by his wife, his daughters, Penny and her husband Jerry McQueary, Sherrill Peterson, Sheila and her husband James Smith; his grandchildren, Eric, Heather, Skyler, Jordan, Anthony, Joshua; his great granddaughter, Allison Rose; his two sisters, Linda and Maryann; his three brothers, Ron, Clyde, and Leonard. He is preceded in death by his Mother, Grace Gray and Step Father, Leonard Woods.
