Guillermo Garcia Nazareno, age 94 went peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2023. Guillermo was born June 23rd,1928 to Mariano Nazareno and Eufrocina Garcia: the fourth child of six children. He was raised in a small fishing and farming town of Naic in the province of Cavite, Philippines. Orphaned early in life, his siblings were separated and raised amongst different relatives. He was brought up by his paternal grandparents and stepmother and became independent at an early age. In February 1946, after the liberation of the Philippines from Japan, he walked 28 kilometers to Sangley Point US Naval Station and enlisted in the US Navy - he was only 17. He served honorably from 1946 to 1968 attaining his highest rank as a senior Chief Petty Officer. In 1953 he married Emilia Diez, his pen-pal of two years. Soon after, they had their first two children Glenn and Gregory. In 1957, they moved to San Diego, CA. The family then grew rapidly, with the addition of Edna, Gilbert, Guillermo Jr, Gerald, Gary, and their twins, Guy and Gaspar. Immediately following his retirement from the Navy, they relocated to the Philippines in 1969 to raise their family. The family chose the central Visayan island of Negros, to settle in the quaint city of Dumaguete. While in the Philippines, Guillermo completed his bachelors degree in Business Administration at Silliman University, attending college at the same time as his older children. In 1981 he returned to the US Navy as a civilian contractor under the Military Sealift Command as a logistics specialist until 1996. Upon retiring for the second time he shared his time living in the Philippines and California where he enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife, children and grandchildren. Guillermo is known for his strong faith in God and his love of family, relatives and friends. He has always been passionate about travel, boxing, horses and horse racing, chickens and big band jazz. “Emong” as he was lovingly called, will be remembered for his infectious smile, wonderful sense of humor, his amazing generosity and being an inspiration to his family and others in always serving the greater good. Guillermo is survived by his wife of 71 years, 7 children, 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
