Betty was born to parents Harry and Fawnia Hoare on September 6, 1929 in Eugene, Oregon. Raised in Eugene, Oregon, and Dunsmuir, California, Betty studied Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley, she joined the Delta Zeta sorority. On trips back to Dunsmuir to visit her family, Betty occasionally found herself on the same train as Jack Dickman, who had played on the very successful Dunsmuir High School basketball team and was also studying at Berkeley. They began dating and married in 1951. Following Jack’s graduation from Berkeley in 1952, and the start of his career as a certified public accountant in San Francisco, Betty also took a job in the financial district and assisted Jack with the management of an apartment building in San Francisco’s Marina District. Then in 1956, Jack took a position as accountant for E&J Gallo Winery and the young couple moved to Modesto, California. Jack and Betty enjoyed tennis, and for some years were active at the Modesto Racquet Club. They enjoyed golf, shared that passion with their children, and were active at Del Rio Golf & Country Club. Betty enjoyed playing bridge, and the company of many wonderful women in and around Modesto who shared that passion. She was an accomplished painter, a voracious reader, and the consummate hostess. Betty was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church for many years and had a deep and abiding faith. She was a loyal friend, and she loved her children with all of her heart. Jack and Betty, often with the whole family, traveled to various parts of the globe. Some months after Jack passed in early 2013, Betty moved to a suburb of Indianapolis to be near her daughter, Diane. Betty died at the age of 88 on November 3, 2017, in Fishers, Indiana. Betty is survived by her son John G. Dickman (Montessa D. Holt), an attorney in Corona, California; and her daughter Diane Dickman (Roberta Roesler), with the NCAA in Indianapolis, Indiana. A memorial service will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home in the Heritage Chapel, 900 Santa Fe Ave. in Hughson, CA 95326 on Thursday, November 30, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. In memory of Betty, donations may be made to Modesto Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 1203, Modesto, CA 95353.
