Bawa Dhanan Singh Rai, age 84, passed from this life on Wednesday afternoon on June 29, 2016. Mr. Singh was born at Ba, Viti Levu Island, Fiji Islands to Dhanna Singh Rai and Harnam Kaur Singh. He was one of seven siblings: Amar Kaur Singh, Balbir Kaur Singh, Udham Kaur Singh, Rattan Kaur Singh, Ranjit Kaur Singh and Channon Singh Rai. In Fiji, he married Prem Kaur and raised a family. In 1964, he and his family immigrated to the United States and decided to live in Modesto, California.
Mr. Singh was a supporter of Stockton Gurdwara Sahib (the site of the first Sikh temple in the United States.) He attended and supported the Gurdwaras’ in Northern California. Mr. Singh worked at Gaylord Manufacturing, owned a gardening business, and the first Subway Sandwich Shop in Modesto. In his spare time, he loved fishing in Alaska, boating, gardening and spending time with his family and friends.
His wife of sixty-four years, Prem Kaur Singh and three children survive him: daughters Abtar Rai Haddox, Raiyn Hardeep Moore, and Sashmir Rai Garcia. Sadly, two sons preceded him in death: Jaswant Singh Rai and Balwant Singh Rai. Mr. Singh is also survived by eight grandchildren: Vincent Singh Haddox, Resham Singh Haddox, Ashwin Kaur Rai, Gurjeet Singh Rai, Desiree Singh, Jasper Singh, Joshua Singh, and Baljeet Singh Rai. He also has five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who he loved and cared about very much.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, July 8, 2016, at Lakewood Funeral Home, 900 South Santa Fe Avenue, Hughson, California. Memorial services will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home from 10:00 to 1:00 pm. on Saturday, July 9, 2016.
The public is invited for prayer services beginning on Thursday, July 7, 2016 and until after the memorial service at the Gurdwara Sahib, 6718 Hughson Avenue, Hughson, CA.
