John was born to Walter and Sylvia Spain on December 6th, 1946. He was raised in Dearborn, MI and was a graduate of Dearborn High School. He later received his Bachelor of Science degree at Michigan State University, where he lettered in Track & Field and set many school and conference records, with a standing school record in the 660 yard dash. He earned a Master of Arts degree from Eastern Michigan University, and retired from Dearborn Public Schools as a dedicated teacher, counselor and coach. Aside from teaching, John was a skilled carpenter and craftsman and enjoyed writing. In retirement he dedicated much of his time to community service efforts through clubs such as the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
John is survived by his three devoted children, Jessica (Dave) Shore, Mason (April) Spain, and Anne Spain; three grandchildren David, Emma, and Rebecca Shore; sister Sylvia (Jim) Burch; and his niece Beth and nephew Clay.
In more recent years, John lived in Houghton Lake, MI, and Tampa, FL where he continued to make his mark and impression on a great number of people. With his wonderful sense of humor and zeal for life, John made several close friends in different places from many different walks of life. He will be most remembered for being active in any endeavor he chose. Whether it was in the classroom, sports clubs that he coached, his household, or any of the number of groups of which he was a member, he worked tirelessly to leave things better than he found them.
John will be greatly missed by all, and is surely designing and building a new wooden deck in his little slice of heaven.
