Helen Yvonne Rodgers Scales passed away peacefully on Friday, the 24th of May 2024 in Houston, Texas. She was 88 years of age. Yvonne was born on the 12th of June 1935, in Electra, Texas, to parents A.E. and Lois (Andrews) Rodgers.
To many in her family, Yvonne was fondly known as “Bonnie” or “Bon”. Yvonne grew up in Electra, except for the World War II years, when her family lived near the neighboring town of Harrold. The Rodgers were faithful members of the First Assembly of God Church in Electra. Music was always a part of Yvonne’s life. She learned how to play the piano from her mother, and enjoyed playing at church and at the weddings of many friends and relatives. She graduated from Electra High School in 1953, where she was named the “FFA Sweetheart” her senior year.
On the 18th of April 1956, Yvonne married Bert F. Scales, son of the late Ewen and Clara Scales, and they shared a happy marriage of over 51 years. Bert’s college studies in geology took them to Midwestern University in nearby Wichita Falls, and then to the University of Nevada at Reno. Bert’s career in the oil and gas business led the family to live in Jackson, Mississippi; New Orleans, Louisiana; and even in Lagos, Nigeria; but for most of their lives, Bert and Yvonne called Houston home.
Yvonne worked as a bookkeeper for various companies from the time she was in high school up until she and Bert started their family. When her children were born, she became a very busy full-time mom. She spent countless hours making sure that her family was well fed and cared for, homework was done, carpools were driven, and that kids made it to their practices, games, and especially church. She often volunteered at local hospitals and for many years helped serve meals at the church’s Wednesday night supper. She made her home comfortable and welcoming to all, and on many occasions, family and friends were guests of the Scales’ while getting treatment at the nearby Texas Medical Center.
After her children were grown, she enjoyed working with Bert in the family’s small oil and gas exploration and production company. Later in life, Bert and Yvonne acquired farm and ranch property in the Electra area, and they greatly enjoyed their visits to the farm and spending time there with friends and family.
Yvonne was one of those people that made you feel special. She made a difference in each life that she touched, she loved unconditionally, and always put others first. Yvonne’s life-long joy was being a loving wife, devoted mother, and proud grandmother. Her greatest happiness was in her family, friends, and neighbors. Her unwavering friendship, love, support, and encouragement will be dearly missed, but we celebrate the fact that she is now at peace and reunited with so many loved ones in the presence of the Lord.
Bert and Yvonne were longtime members of Westbury Baptist Church in Houston, where they were blessed with many dear friends.
Yvonne is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert; her brother, Weldon Rodgers and his wife Ruth; and her sister-in-law, Mary Barker. She is also preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters-in-law on the Scales side of the family, being Homer and Marcilee Scales; Opal Scales Eggenbacher; Johnny and Rexena Scales; Fannie and John Thompson; E.D. Scales, Jr.; and Udella and Donald “Bud” Tucker.
She is survived by her brother, Morris Barker; her sons, Roger Scales and his wife Nancy, and their children Andrew and Payton and Jonathan Scales and his wife Charlotte, and their children Helen, Dorothy, and Clara; and many other cherished family members and friends.
The family extends its grateful appreciation to Yvonne’s friends and caregivers for their love and support over the past few years.
