Yan was born to parents who were both teachers. She grew up in Beijing, China, and was an excellent student, always striving to be the best she could be. She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Russian literature with highest honors at the Naval University of Engineering and Beijing Normal University. After graduating, she served in the Chinese Navy for 8 years.
Yan moved to Houston, Texas in 2004 and quickly became part of her community at the Northwest Houston Chinese Baptist Church. She received her Texas Educator Certificate in Mathematics in 2010 and began teaching high school math at the Harmony School of Advancement in Houston. Yan’s pride was in her school and students, and she is widely known for her passion for learning and teaching. In 2019, she affirmed her belief in the rights and freedoms guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution and became a U.S. Citizen.
Yan dedicated her life to her family and faith. She loved the arts, and enjoyed dancing and singing. She was an avid gardener and grew many types of flowers. Her pleasant personality created a lasting impression on everyone she met. Yan loved God’s word and lived in faith. Yan was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and high school teacher, and her love of life does not come to an end with her passing.
Yan is survived by her husband, Hongli, and two sons, Jeff and Alan, as well as her parents, two sisters, and brother.
