Winnie Kwan Yau, age 87, died in Houston, Texas on January 29, 2024. She was born on March 1, 1936, in Macau, to Kwan Kai Ming and Wong Woun Wen. She married George Yau and migrated to Los Angeles, California. She is survived by siblings, sisters-in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Funeral services will take place at Forest Park on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 2pm. She will be greatly missed.
Winnie was born into a family of many siblings. Her father moved the family to different countries to run his businesses. He was working hard to raise a big family. After her family moved to Hong Kong, her father's business grew bigger and became a successful leader in his industry. Winnie lived a comfortable life when she was growing up, but her mother passed away when she was only a teenager. She attended Baptist College and met the love of her life. Her father saw her dating George and gave her the blessing to get married without meeting him. Winnie and George were happily married for 57 years. They adventured their married lives in different cities and finally settled in Los Angeles, California and later in Houston, Texas.
Winnie was always wearing a sweet smile that drew people towards her warm and kind personality. George called her "May, May" as his sweetest and closest happy companion. Their love was long lasting and was displayed in front of our eyes. Winnie had another nickname from work. She was called the "Smart Cookie" by many of her friends at work. She was working in the Thrifty retailer corporate office as a computer operator for many years. The work was hard and demanding. She was smart and her peers looked up to her. For those working years, she felt she was living a fulfilling life even though there were days she had to go to work in those cold morning hours.
Winnie will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her smiles, her kindness, and her warm personality will never be forgotten, and our memories of Winnie will always be with us.
