Wilma Pearl (Baker) Clark passed away peacefully on July 1, 2021, at the age of 100 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on November 23, 1920, in Stroud, Oklahoma, the first child of DeWitt and Maude Baker. A few years later the family moved to a farm close to Ramona, Oklahoma. Wilma attended school in Vera, Oklahoma, graduating from Vera High School in 1938.
Wilma attended Oklahoma A & M University where she studied Home Economics and graduated in 1942. It was at A & M where she met Lauren W. Clark who became her husband in December, 1941. Lauren’s degree was in Agriculture, and after graduating he became a grain inspector. Due to his working for the U. S. government, the family to move to Biloxi, MS, where son Robert was born in 1943, Enid, OK, where daughter Marilyn was born in 1949, Galveston, Tx., Houston, Tx. Memphis, Tn., and finally back to Houston.
Wilma was a worker her entire life; first on the farm, then working her way through college. After marriage she was a homemaker. When her children were old enough she took a job with the Tennessee Welfare Department. It was in Houston where she began her long career with Sears and Roebuck. She became a department manager quickly and retired from Sears many years later. After retiring, inactivity didn’t suit her, so she took a job with the Internal Revenue office in Houston, where she worked part time for many years until retiring again.
Wilma Clark is survived by her son Robert and his wife Bonney of Tulsa, OK; son-in-law Byrne Smith of San Antonio, TX; grandson Jeff Smith, his wife Lori and son Brandon of Richardson, TX; and granddaughter Leslie Guerra, her husband Omar and daughter Libby of San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Wilma was preceded in death by her husband Lauren, and her daughter Marilyn Smith, who died of ALS in 2020. Also preceding her in death were Wlima’s brother Frank Baker, sister Mildred Whitlock, and sister Rilda Wolfe,.
Wilma will be interned at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, in Houston, beside her husband. There will be a graveside service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the ALS Society.
