William Robert Cox, better known as “Bob,” was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, Pawpaw, and friend. He passed away peacefully on March 12, 2023, at age 87. We know that he is whole, healed, at peace, and reunited with Bobbye Sue who passed away in August. We are all so grateful they are at rest together.
He is survived by his brother, George E. Cox III “Boogin”, his son Billy & wife Colette, his son Robert & wife Kristin, his son Chris & wife Monika, and his seven grandchildren, Billy, Cooper, Keller, and Cade, Haley, CJ, and Brandon. He was proceeded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Bobbye Sue, and his brother John.
He was born in Hillsboro, Texas, on December 31, 1935. He spent his childhood years in Abbott, Texas, growing up on his parent's farm. Abbot is where he would meet Bobbye Sue. They were married just before he was called up to proudly serve our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in the early ’60s. He came home and continued his masonry career installing marble and granite in courthouses, libraries, and airports all throughout the Midwest. Bob and Bobbye Sue grew their family and together had three boys: Billy, Robert, and Chris.
Bob dedicated his life to hard work, Bobby Sue, his three boys, and his grandkids. His family was everything to him; his friends were next. If you knew Bob, you loved Bob. He was a friend to all, a mentor to many, and always had a story to tell.
Bob loved to work; to him, it wasn’t work at all, it was his life. He worked with his hands. He worked with marble and granite. He worked at the shop, he worked in his garden, he worked in his yard. He worked wherever and whenever he could. There was always a job that found its way to Bob.
Despite his love for hard work, he never ran out of energy for his family. By day it was hard work and by night it was a sporting event for Billy, Robert, or Chris, and eventually his grandkids. You must understand, he didn’t just come to see his boys or his grandkids; he was there to watch your kids too. If you were on the team with one of the Coxes, Bob Cox was your biggest fan.
Whatever Bob was having or doing, he wanted you to partake in as well. From turnip greens to iced tea, watermelon with salt, or leftovers that needed to be thrown out…he wanted to share with you, what he had.
At age 84, when he retired from daily life at the shop, he brought the shop home to his driveway. He crafted hearts, stars, and crosses. He mastered the State of Texas. He did it because he loved it and loved to give away what he made.
He dedicated his later years to being the primary caregiver for Bobbye Sue. She had served him coffee in bed for over 50 years and suddenly, he was making coffee and bringing it to her. It was special to watch his love and care for her, along with his willingness to learn and do things he had never done.
You did it Pawpaw! You ran the race with endurance and fought the good fight until the very end. You were a very special man with a twinkle in your eyes. You left a legacy to us all through the life you lived. You will be greatly missed and forever remember.
