Wells Marion Johnson, a beloved son, brother, cousin, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, the 23rd of February 2025. Born to Todd Marion Johnson and Paige Smither Johnson in Houston on the 18th of June 1993. Wells lived a life filled with adventure, a wonderful giggling laughter, and an unmistakable twinkle in his eye.
From a young age, Wells was a force of nature—brave, quick-witted, and deeply intuitive. He grew up in Houston, attending Briargrove Elementary School and later The Kinkaid School, where he graduated in 2012. An outstanding athlete, Wells excelled in football and baseball, displaying both natural talent and relentless dedication. His teammates knew him not just for his athleticism, but for his fierce loyalty and infectious humor. He had a way of making people feel special, always ready with a joke, a smile, or an encouraging word.
Wells carried that same passion and charisma to the University of Alabama where he became a proud member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He loved the Crimson Tide (Roll Tide!) and he followed them across the country to National Championship games. Whether in a stadium or on a couch with friends, watching Alabama play football was a great joy.
The eldest of five brothers, Wells was the heart of the "Johnson 5." His younger brothers adored him, looking up to him not just as a sibling but as a protector and mentor. The bond they shared was unbreakable, their childhoods filled with legendary adventures, endless laughter, fierce backyard competitions and mischief.
Wells had an insatiable curiosity. He was always thinking, always questioning new business endeavors with his family. He has been especially excited and passionate about working alongside his dad and his managing partner, Eddie, at Town and Country Party Rentals and recently reacquired Aztec Party & Tent Rentals. Wells’ role as vice president was one he took great pride in. He was filled with ideas and excited about his leadership role in revitalizing the company.
Wells had an adventurous spirit. Hunting and fishing were second nature to him, passions passed down through generations of his family. He was a marksman with an uncanny ability, hunting across four continents. Even more than the sport itself, he loved the camaraderie—late nights by the fire, the storytelling, the deep-rooted traditions and quality time with family and friends. The family ranch in South Texas was his sanctuary, a place where he felt truly free.
Wells was a man of contrasts—a fierce competitor but a gentle soul. A deep thinker, but always ready to be silly. Wells loved intensely and embraced life with a fearless heart. He was one of a kind, the type of person you don’t forget, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Wells was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sally S. and David M. Johnson, and Stephanie K. and John H. Smither.
He is survived by his loving parents, Paige and Todd Johnson; his brothers, John David Smither Johnson (fiancé Katherine Woolridge), Pierce Henderson Johnson (wife Elizabeth), Willard Hill Johnson, and Blake Smither Johnson.
He also leaves behind a large family including his aunts, uncles, and cousins: Craig Johnson (wife Kathy) and family, Clayton Johnson (wife Myra) and family, Susanne Maida (husband James) and family, Ashley Langley (husband Curt) and family, John Kerr Smither (wife Ann) and family, Zou Kerr Cherry (husband Boyd), Martha Smither, and Sam Schneider.
Wells will be remembered and missed most for the beautiful person he was and the valuable life lessons he taught us. His generous smile gave us comfort, his infectious laugh and sense of humor taught us to live life to the fullest and choose joy every day. His journey reminds us to be courageous, never give up, and love unconditionally.
Wells’ life is a gift we will always cherish and we live in faith knowing his angel wings are spread wide holding each of us in his tender grace and eternal love. May his laughter always be heard, his stories be remembered, and his memory be a blessing.
