He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 17, 1947, to Walter J. Grow and Beatrice Grow (Yates). He was raised in Cardenas (Panama) and graduated from Balboa High School (Class of 1965). After high school graduation, John enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. After completing his tour of duty in Vietnam, he attended and graduated from the University of Houston with a BA. Shortly after graduation, he was hired by the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller for fifteen years.
John was an avid golfer and a marathon runner all of his life. After three years of working in Alaska, his love for golf led him back to Houston to the Memorial Park Golf Club where he worked for many years prior to his death.
He is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Beatrice Grow and brother-in-law Robert C. Panzer. He is survived by his sister Patricia Panzer of Houston; niece Jacqueline Salterio and husband Hector Miranda of Houston; nephew Ricardo Salterio and wife Ana Cristina of Panama; step-niece Cathleen Panzer and step-nephew Robert Panzer of Houston; and four grand-nieces.
