On Saturday, the 3rd of April, 2010, Virginia Moran Thomas, age 88, went home to be with her Heavenly Father. Virginia was the daughter of the late Anne Moran Sutton, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She grew up in Pine Bluff, graduated from high school, went on to attend a 2 year business college and then moved to New Orleans where she began her secretarial career with the Chevron Corporation. She spent 15 years in New Orleans where she developed several cherished, life-long friends. She later took a promotion with the same company, leading her to Houston, where she met and later married the love of her life, Lester L. Thomas, Jr., on the 12th of September, 1959.
Virginia spent her life as a devoted housewife and mother. She was a long time member of Second Baptist Church and an ardent supporter of Baylor University, with her husband. She also served as a lifetime member of the Junior League of Houston. She cared ardently and sacrificially for her disabled son and lived her life for serving others. She was a Candy Striper at Memorial City and Rosewood Hospitals; volunteered endless hours at the schools her daughter attended and devoted her life to the church, where she worked in the nursery and taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years. She lived a life of faithfulness to God, her family and her country. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend and was loved by many. She will be long remembered for her kind, gentle spirit and love and devotion for others.
Virginia was preceded in death by her son, Duane Lafayette Thomas, her husband of 50 years, Lester Lafayette Thomas, Jr. and is survived by her daughter, Luanne Thomas Grigsby and her two grandchildren, Carter Lawson Grigsby and Meagan Anne Grigsby, all of Houston.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until eight o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 8th of April at Geo. H. Lewis and Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
Following a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, a memorial service of celebration will be held at one o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 9th of April, in the Hankamer Chapel at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway in Houston.
A reception will immediately follow at the church.
The family requests that any donations be made to the Duane Thomas and Luanne Thomas Endowment Scholarship Fund at Trewitt Seminary, Baylor University, One Bear Place, #97026, Waco, TX 76798-7026, established by Virginia and her husband in memory of their son, Duane and in honor of their daughter, Luanne.
