Virginia attended Texas State College for Women for two years. After augment¬ing her diet with bananas for three weeks in order to reach the required minimum weight, she enlisted in the WAVES in October of 1943, and served as a censor/translator during WWII. Discharged from the Navy in February of 1946, she enrolled at the University of Houston, graduating in May of 1948 with a teaching degree. Virginia met Creath Morris “Mac” McGee on a blind date and, after a whirlwind court¬ship, they were married on August 7, 1948. They were to remain very happily married for almost 53 years, until Mac’s death in 2001.
Virginia retired from teach¬ing to raise her family. In her fifties she returned to college, graduating with a degree in Library Science from UH Clear Lake. She enjoyed her position as school librarian of Atherton Elementary until her retirement in 1984.
She loved nature, reading, the beach, traveling, and most of all family. She was very proud of being a fifth-generation Texan and having descended from members of Austin’s colony.
Virginia is predeceased by all her beloved siblings. She is survived by her children Katherine Fewox, William McGee, Mary McGee and her husband Paul Downes, and grandson John Fewox. She is also survived by her two sisters-in-law, Jessica Munson and Dorothy McGee, as well as many nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank the kind people of Uni¬versity Place Nursing Center and Compassionate Care Hospice for all their help.
The memorial service is to be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 10th of April, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately follow¬ing, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
In lieu of flowers the fam¬ily suggests donations to be made to the Brazoria County Historical Museum, 100 E. Cedar, Angleton, TX 77515 or the charity of your choice.
