My sweet mother Vicky Elaine Robinson transitioned peacefully on May 12, 2015 to be with the Lord surrounded by her family in Houston, Texas. A strong willed woman my mother had fought many years with faith, humor, and determination. I told her a few days before her passing, "Mama, cancer didn't win, you won and I am very proud of you" My mother was born to Winfred Sally Smith, October 14, 1952 in Timpson, Texas. As a young child she accepted the Lord and was baptized at Greater Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Fifth Ward, Houston Texas. She attended grade school in Houston, but returned to live in Timpson with her Mother, Sally; Grandmother, Eva McQueen; and baby sister, Janet Smith, where they were active members of Symrna Baptist Church. My mother graduated from Timpson High school in 1971. She was the first African American cheerleader for the Timpson Bears and voted Class Favorite and Most Dependable. After graduating from high school she moved back to Houston to attend Texas Southern University. My mother married her soul mate, Muriel Robinson, on February 15, 1976, in Fifth Ward Houston, they were united in love by Reverend Emmett Thompson of Christian Love. My parents celebrated 39 years of marriage this year. My mother started her professional career in Houston at Tenneco, Inc. in 1975. According to her close friend and coworker Verstene Traylor, "To know Vicky Robinson was to love for what she stood for. Vicky was one of the most unpretentious individual you ever met. She was very computer savvy who always kept abreast of the latest office technology (hardware and software) and gained the respect of upper management as well as other office and secretarial staff members. The world is a better place because of individuals like Vicky Robinson who always remained true to herself, unchanged, grounded, and steadfast in her beliefs. We thank God for the gift HE placed " In the late 1980s my mother and father relocated to Longview to be closer to family. She worked at Marathon LeTourneau (Joy Global) as a Parts Correspondent. In 1997 she was diagnosed with several brain aneurysms and was forced to retire. During her retirement my mother enjoyed gardening, taking care of her family, and the company of her beloved Oliver. She was the primary caregiver of her eldest sister, Mattie Yvonne Hall, who passed in 2013. In 2012 she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and moved back to Houston, to be closer to MD Anderson Cancer Center. My mother was always a joy, even in her last days she continued to make us laugh. My close friends often times marveled at her strong faith and determination to beat cancer. She had already personally witnessed the wondrous works of God as a brain aneurysm survivor. She made her peace, and was ready to go home and be with the Lord. My mother leaves to mourn: her faithful husband Muriel Robinson, myself daughter Chasity Robinson, baby sister Janet Smith, and a host of relatives and friends whom she dearly loved. Although we are deeply sadden to lose her physical form, we know she will always be with us.
