She was a native Houstonian, 1957 graduate of Lamar High School and received her B.S. from The University of Texas where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. After graduating UT, Verlene moved to San Antonio where she met her husband, Arthur and taught at MacArthur High School for two years before moving back to Houston.
Verlene was also an active member at Holy Cross Lutheran Church since 1963. Verlene was beloved by many and touched many lives with her generosity and passion for life. Besides spending time with her family and friends, Verlene had a passion for traveling, doing puzzles, gardening and attending sporting events (especially if it involved her grandchildren, the Astros or UT football).
Preceded in death by her parents and husband of 39 years, Arthur L. Furley. She is survived by her brother Earl Luetge (and wife Nancy); daughter, Emily Furley Thompson (and husband Danny); daughter Elaine Furley Monrad (and husband Carl); and son, Ronald Furley (and wife Jennifer); nine grandchildren, DJ Thompson (and wife, Sarah); Theresa Thompson Garza (and husband Ernest); Kenneth Thompson, Elissa Monrad, Christopher Monrad, Carter Monrad, Carson, Monrad, Caitlin Furley and Austin Furley; and two great grandchildren, Claire Thompson and Trey Garza and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2020 in the Chapel of Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77077.
