Velia P. Garza, born May 31, 1920 went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 24, 2016. She was born in San Antonio, TX where she lived up until 1979, when she moved to Houston, TX for a brief period of time. She returned to San Antonio to continue her social life with many of her cousins and friends. Velia had many interests, adventures and hobbies throughout her life. She was an avid bowler and was in a bowling league where her and her husband Nicholas would compete with other bowling leagues. She loved to crochet and made sure everyone in the family had an afghan blanket, hat, vest, pot holders, and made items upon request. She was a secretary for a short period of time for the San Antonio school district. She loved to travel and made excursions to Italy and Spain and also traveled to visit with family in Oklahoma, California, and Missouri. Velia along with her husband Nick were heavily involved with many of the social clubs in San Antonio, such as Andaluz, Double Ring, Anahuac, and many others. She enjoyed dancing, socializing, country music, crossword puzzles, and reading. She returned to Houston in 1998 where she dedicated the rest of her life to her children and grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Nicholas Garza. She will be greatly missed by her children and their spouses, Evelyn Enriquez & Ernest, Nick Garza & Enriquetta; brother, Henry F. Galan and wife Catherine; Grandchildren and their spouses, Sonia Fernandez & Rudy, Jessica Mata & Gabriel, Erica Amaya & Miguel, Michelle Juarez & Robert, Christine Hancock & Tommy, Nicole Brooks & Mike, AnnMarie Perez & Sammy; great grandchildren; Marisa Reyes & husband Antonio, Anissa Gil & husband Rafael, Michael Mata & wife Viviana, James Mata, Bianca Amaya, Melanie Amaya, Miguel A. Amaya, Michael Juarez, Samantha Hancock, Joshua Hancock, Renee Perez, Alexis Perez; great great-grandchildren, Isabel Reyes, Jacob Reyes, Jackson Reyes, Evelina Gil, Andres Gil, Ernesto Gil, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm Monday, March 28, 2016 at Brookside Funeral Home. A rosary service will begin at 7:30 pm Monday evening. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Brookside Funeral Home with interment to follow in Brookside Memorial Park.
