Tommy Garcia born July 23, 1951 returns to our savior on October 24, 2020, after a long battle with cirrhosis of the liver. An East Houston native, he attended De Zavala Elementary, Edison High School and San Jacinto High school. He shared his memories of playing baseball at De Zavala Park and Mason Park; and of the fun times he had with his boys from Avenue J. Tommy was the youngest sibling of six sisters and one brother, a large family which included many beloved nephews and nieces.
On November 14, 1970, Tommy Garcia married Carmen Cortez. Just 21 days shy of completing their 50th wedding anniversary. Tommy and Carmen raised 5 children: Melanie, Michelle, Tommy Jr, Gregory, and Nicholas; and Grandpa to 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Tommy Garcia was a United States Army Veteran, where he served from 1970 until 1976. He was station at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii for four years, and deployed to Australia during his time of service. He acquired several technical certifications throughout his years from Houston Community College. He began his apprenticeship with the Houston Chronicle Newspaper as a Machinist in the Machine shop where he met many life-long friends. Tommy retired from the Houston Chronicle after 20 years of employment. For the next 18 years of his life he worked at various companies from Tuboscope, Drill-Quip Inc, Hydril Company and Lawler’s Deserts. His favorite was Lawler’s Deserts where his Bonus was bringing home various deserts, which he gifted to his family and friends.
Tommy shared his love for fishing and hunting with his family and friends, whom he created many memories with throughout his lifetime.
Preceded in death by his parents, Alejandro & Esther Garcia; four sisters Mary, Betty, Nina, Tita and brother Joe; his son Gregory Alexander; his granddaughter Vanessa Llorraine; and a great-grandson Maceo. Left to mourn his life is his wife of 50 years Carmen Cortez Garcia; daughter Melanie & Francisco Pardo, daughter Michelle Garcia Jordan, son Tommy & Kerri Garcia Jr and son Nicholas S. Garcia; as well as 12 Grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his sisters Gloria Garcia and Marie Gonzalez; and numerous nephews and nieces who love their uncle Tommy.
Please join us in celebrating a Memorial Mass on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 10am at the Resurrection Catholic Church located at 915 Zoe Street Houston, TX 77020. A reception will follow in the church hall.
