He was born the 2nd of October 1917, in Jacksboro, Texas, the son of Margaret and H. H. (Scotty) Taylor.
He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from the Oklahoma Military Academy and the University of Texas. Tommy was a member of the Texas golf team for two years winning a national championship and coached by the great golf legend Harvey Penick. He was also a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity, Texas Cowboy’s Association, Cactus Goodfellow Outstanding Student Association, Life Member of the Ex-Student’s Association and served as secretary of the Houston chapter of the Texas-Ex’s. He was a great friend of football coach Darrell K. Royal and had the honor of walking the sidelines as an honorary coach at the 1963 National Football Championship game.
He joined the 124th Calvary in 1940 and stationed in Brownsville and El Paso, Texas. After two years, he was transferred to the US Army Air Corp and received his wings as a pilot in Altus, Oklahoma in 1943. He was stationed in San Marcos, Texas until his honorable discharge in 1945.
During his business career as a petroleum geologist, he worked for Pan American Production Company, Dow Chemical Company and served as Vice President of Grace Oil Company and President of Paloma Production Company. He was a former member of the Independent Petroleum Association and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
He was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and Lakeside Country Club.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Robert H. Taylor; and son, Thomas F. Taylor, Jr. and son-in-law, Ned Gill, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Sara Cave Taylor, two children, Judy Taylor Ewing and her husband Lee, and Don Cave Taylor of Houston, daughter-in-law, Linda Taylor, wife of Thomas F. Taylor Jr. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Chris Gill, Brian Gill, wife Paige and Allison Taylor and two great grandchildren, Sara Makenzie and Andrew Hudson Gill that will greatly miss their "Dada."
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 27th of December, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The interment is to be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 28nd of December, at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Dr. Thomas J. Pace, Senior Pastor, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, is to officiate.
