Thomas Wesley Smith, 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 20, 2018. Thomas was born on December 27, 1926, in Tyler, Texas. He was the fourth of nine children. At the age of 16, he left home and moved to Houston. In 1947, after his service in the military, he returned to Houston and met Pauline L. Sparks and they were married the same year. To their union they had three children, two boys and one girl.
In the Navy, Thomas joined the ATB Boxing Team and boxed in the San Diego Coliseum. Two years after marrying Pauline he started working at Hughes Tool Company now known as Baker Hughes which lasted over 53 years. In 1949, Thomas became the first graduated journeyman electrician. As a Leadman Electrician, he dedicated interest to the community. Thomas coached Little League Baseball for five years and became a member of Park Place Masonic Lodge, where he is still a member, and was a Houston Commander in the Knight Templar. He also served on Hughes Employees Credit Union Board of Directors for over forty years. Tom was an avid golfer, playing three or four times every week and participated in many tournaments.
Thomas is preceded by his parents, Earnest and Edna Smith, mother of his children, Pauline L. Smith.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 15 years, Sylvia, children, T. Wayne Smith, Johnny and his wife Sue Haley Smith, Paula Stevens and her husband Ben, grandchildren, James and wife Chelsea Carpenter, Shan and husband Chris Harris, Chad and wife Hannah Smith, great-grandchildren, Hannah Harris, Cole Harris, Harper Smith, Bailey Carpenter, Riley Carpenter, siblings, Dorothy Mosier and Maxine Stroud.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 10 a.m. for a Funeral Service at Brookside Funeral Home. The committal will take place following the service at Brookside Memorial Park.
