Tom was born on January 11, 1955 to Evelyn Brenke Smith and Charles Leslie Smith in Anaco, Venezuela. He grew up in Anaco and Bogotá Colombia, and in 1965 he moved with his family to Houston, Texas. Tom graduated from Memorial High School in 1973 and went on to attend Louisiana State University before transferring to New York University in Fall of 1975. He received his BFA from the NYU School of the Arts in 1977. Shortly after graduating, Tom went to work for his late father in the oil and gas industry.
In 1977, Tom met Maria Sanchez at a hamburger eating contest in Houston Texas. Though he was on a date with another woman at the time, he discreetly asked Maria for her phone number and arranged a date that evening. Tom and Maria were married in the fall of of 1979. They went on to have three children, Patrick Thomas Smith, Anna Cecilia Smith, and Martin Joseph Smith.
In 1988, Tom received his MBA from the University of Houston. In 1997, he founded Ecofluids, his business supplying drilling fluids to the oil and gas industry.
Tom was loved by all who met him. His selfless and giving nature drew you in closely, and inspired you toward generosity in your own life. Tom took on many interests in his life, but he was most passionate about photography. He had great artistic talent and loved documenting his travels to South America and Europe. Tom loved scuba diving, listening to Cat Stevens and Fleetwood Mac, coaching his children in youth soccer, and watching old James Bond movies. The greatest loves of his life were his three children, whom he loved deeply. He will be forever missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in law Daphne and Michael Light, Adrienne and John Purcell, his brother and sister-in-law Charlie and Laurie Smith, his son and daughter-in-law Patrick Smith and Skye Stewart-Short, his daughter and son-in-law Anna and Colin Contreary, his son Martin Smith and their mother Maria Sanchez Smith, and his granddaughter Scout Smith. A Funeral service will be held on Sunday May 7, 2023 at 11:00 am in the Memorial Oaks Texas Liberty Chapel, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079.
