He was born in Alabama on February 29, 1944, to Jack and Jean Mooney. He was married to his sweet bride, Susan Mooney, for 49 happy years. Tom held a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech and worked in the oil and gas industry his entire career. Starting at Chevron, where he met his future father-in-law, he then moved to Houston and spent most of his career as a self-employed oil trader/broker at SouthEast Energy, largely to spend more time with his family and kids.
He was a member of Spring Branch Community Church/Bridgepoint Bible Church for over 40 years. He served there in various roles including deacon and elder, but perhaps his most well-known role was as a greeter where he was given the title “Parking Lot Tom”. For many he was the first smiling face and shaking hand they encountered at church. He also loved and served inner city youth with Cornerstone Family Ministries for 20 years with his wife, Susan.
He had many passions and loves in his life including coaching and cheering for his kids and grandkids in their sporting events, making people smile with jokes and personalized handshakes, all things outdoors, especially hiking in Yosemite, but foremost was his relationship with Jesus. He never missed an opportunity to share the freedom he had found in Christ. In his estimation, he was always ”better than he deserved”.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, his daughter, Katy Watts, her spouse, Adam Watts, and their children, Audrey, Clara, Emma, and Ava; his son, Patrick Mooney, his spouse, Annie Mooney, and their children, John Patrick, Elise, and Larkin; and his brothers, Dan and Bob Mooney.
Despite a twelve-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease, Tom never lost his loving and courageous spirit. He touched the hearts of all those he met. He will be missed by everyone, especially his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family would love for you to send your favorite memories to them.
Celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, November 3, at 10:30 am at:
