He confessed his faith in God at a very early age at Macedonia Baptist Church in Sealy, Texas and later joined St. John A.M.E. Church in Brenham, Texas.
Thomas was drafted into the United States Army on November 14, 1956, served his country dutifully and received an honorable discharge from the army on February 3, 1958.
After his tour of duty in the United States Army, he returned to Brenham and when unable to find employment, he moved his wife and himself to Houston. He worked odd jobs until he secured a truck driver position with several companies where he hauled merchandise locally and long distance. When his wife expressed her desire to return to Brenham to live, he moved her back and built a home there for her and his children but stayed in Houston from Monday to Friday to work and going home to Brenham on the weekends. He continued in this line of work for over 50+ years before retiring.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Anderson Johnson and Augusta Jackson-Johnson, two infant brothers, sister Margaree Johnson, brother Willie Charles Johnson and wife Shirley Williams Johnson whom he married on November 6, 1956.
Thomas leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Anderson Johnson, Jr.; five sisters, Gladys Johnson-McQueen; Doris Johnson-Hubert; Helen Johnson-Overshown; Loretha Johnson and Mildred L. Johnson-Harris (James Harris); three children, Veronica Faye Cloud (Anthony Cloud), Joan Mack and Thomas James Johnson, Jr. (Sharon Johnson), grandsons, Shaun Johnson (Courtney Johnson), Nicholas Johnson, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews and cousins.
