Tom Hudson passed away on April 20, 2011 after a short acute illness.He was born in Jackson Mississippi to Mary Eloise Sheets and Hugh Thomas Hudson, after which the family lived a short time in Charlottesville VA before moving to Houston. He attended Lora Bell Peck Elementary in Houston for 2nd through 6th grades and a semester at Stonewall Jackson Jr. High. In Houston he was active in cub scouts and boy scouts, took cello at the elementary school, and played on an elementary school football team for a year. A lot of time was spent running around on the University of Houston campus, swimming at the pool and visiting Shasta.
At Christmas, 1968, the family moved to Dhaka, Bangladesh where he attended DASS (Dacca American Society School) for 7th – 9thgrades. He was also active in boy scouts there, camping in Mymensingh and other areas around Dhaka, and attending the world Jamboree in Malacca, Malaysia in 1970. The trip to Dhaka and residence there allowed for trips to various places in Asia and Africa on holidays, visiting Hawaii, Tokyo, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Penang, Delhi, Agra, Lahore, and a safari through Kenya and Tanzania.
After returning to the States, he attended Spring Branch High School in Houston, graduating in 1974, and went to the University of Houston for a semester before joining the army airborne in January 1975 and serving in Alaska until 1981. He was at Fort Richardson in the 172d Light Arctic Infantry Brigade
When he returned to Houston he brought back his first dog, Sheba, a malamute, starting a long trend of dog ownership. He took annual camping vacations, returning to Colorado, Yellowstone, and the Tetons as his favorite places and his loyal dog in tow. He started what would be a lifelong career in the oil and gas industry, working for Daniels, Instromet and TGMS. During this time he made many friends in the industry across the country and abroad.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Eloise Sheets and Hugh Thomas Hudson, and is survived by his sister Barbara Hudson of Kyle, brother William Hudson of Kyle, nieces Alison Hight of Austin and Emily Hudson of Raleigh, and nephew Tommy Hudson of Kyle.
Tom wanted to make a difference in the world and requested that some of his money be donated to charity. Two memorial funds have been set up in his name. One is meant to help others suffering from addiction, and a second to help veterinary students at A&M, based on his love of his dogs. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to these funds in Tom’s memory.
