The eldest child and only son of Clare Williams Broun and Edwin Conway “Ned” Broun, Jr., Ted was born on the 26th of June 1952. For 70 years, Ted lived large and always on his terms. His Brad Pitt good looks, keen intellect, sharp wit, smooth dance moves, and bad-boy antics remain legendary. An avid outdoorsman, Ted’s hunting and fishing mounts were so plentiful and big he purchased homes with large walls and high ceilings to showcase them.
A fourth generation Houstonian, Ted graduated from Briargrove Elementary, T.H. Rogers Junior High, and Robert E. Lee High School, Class of 1970, before entering The University of Texas at Austin on a full scholastic scholarship. At UT, Ted joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, where he made lifelong, cherished friendships and memories so colorful his scholarship was cancelled after freshman year. Ted graduated with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering in 1974 and in 1984 received his M.S. in Engineering Management from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
An accomplished career in the oil and gas industry ensued, most notably as an independent producer. Ted was well regarded as a gifted, esteemed petroleum engineer with the unique ability to quantify oil and gas reserves on a project and transform them into accurate economic projections. In tandem with his partner and friend, John Eads, Ted analyzed, financed, and sold forty successful oil and gas acquisitions within a decade.
Always the protective, beloved older brother, Ted’s four sisters and their families survive him: Dr. Stacy Broun, Clare and Bill Johnson, Nancy and Cardon Gerner, and Faye and Mike Wyatt; nieces and nephews: Nellie Broun, Mimi and Chad Meacham, Kathleen and Rob Pieratt, Annie and Carson Tinker, Maks Gerner , Richard Wyatt, Rachel and Noah Thacher, and Daniel Wyatt; great-nieces and nephews: Mae, Hazel, and Bates Meacham; Lucy, Conway, and Etta Pieratt; “Hootie” Tinker; and Ellie and Ollie Thacher.
Ted’s family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate, loving care given by C&S Care Management, Inc. and Simplex Health and Allied Services, Inc., and most especially by Ted’s “main man,” Clifford Ubani.
