English:
Hoàng Thị Tám was born with her twin sister, Hoàng Thị Bảy, in 1928, in Hải Dương, North Vietnam. Born into a large, humble home, Bà was forced into adulthood at a young age. She lost her mother at the age of two, and twelve years later, lost her father at the age of fourteen. Bà sought refuge with her brother soon after and continued caring for her family for the next few years of her life.
At the age of 19, she married Nguyễn Kim Luyện. The pair migrated to Saigon in 1954 and had seven children together. Orphaned at a young age, Bà wanted to ensure that her kids grew up with the parental figures she never had. She endured through pain, sadness, and misery to ensure that her children were always fed and lived a happy life. In 1971, Ông Bà’s eldest son immigrated to the United States to study abroad. Though a peaceful life then, grief struck when they lost their eldest daughter, leaving the family to carry an inconsolable sorrow.
It wasn’t soon when war came knocking during the Fall of Saigon in 1975, when her husband, Ông, was forced into a re-education camp. Their sixth-born child then left the country for America, where she reconnected with her eldest brother. Missing her husband and her children, Bà was forced to make ends meet on her own as a farmhand to care for all her young children in the home.
Eight years later in 1983, Ông returned home from the re-education camp. It was then their fourth-born child fled the country in search of freedom and was reunited with his eldest brother and younger sister in the United States.
Early of 1991, Ông Bà were sponsored by their eldest son to rejoin in the States. It wasn’t until then that Bà’s life became more composed, despite her arrival in foreign land. One by one, Ông Bà’s children got married, and Bà once again devoted her life to taking care of her grandchildren without hesitation. We grew up in her loving arms, cherishing our many memories we shared with her. To Bà, being close to her children and grandchildren was her greatest joy in life.
Through her many hardships in life, Bà's faith, love, and unwavering devotion to her family has gotten us to where we are today. She was a caring, selfless, resilient mother and grandmother, whose strength paved the way for our future. She was a woman who overcame unimaginable pain; but, through it all, turned that despair into love for her children and grandchildren. With the dream to one day return to her village, Bà's life was cut too short. She left us to join the afterlife on the morning of September 23, 2022. She lived to be 94 years old. Bà leaves behind her husband, six children, fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
We are reminded of Bà's sacrifices every day. She taught us the importance of patience, living a humble life, and giving without the intention of receiving. Through the eyes of those who love her, she is seen as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who will continue to live on in our hearts. Bà's life story was told to her children, who passed these stories down to us, and her story will continue to be told for generations to come. We miss her dearly and hope that her soul is now free from pain and suffering. We pray that she may now rest in eternal peace.
