Susan Clayton Garwood

Susan was born in Houston, Texas on the 3rd of February 1961. The daughter of Jean Forsyth Garwood and W. St. John Garwood, Jr., she was predeceased by her father, her brother Robert Garwood, her brother Morgan Garwood, and her step-children Wesley and Alexander Peterkin. She graduated from St. John’s School in 1979, from Georgetown University in 1983 and from Sotheby’s American Arts Course in 1987.

She is survived by her mother; her loyal husband of 20 years, George Peterkin III; her children John and Kate Peterkin; her aunt Merle Garwood; her cousins, Mary Garwood Yancy and her husband Howard, Max Yancy, Elliott Yancy, Meghan Yancy, Cameron Yancy, Debbie and Will Garwood, Laura Rozelle, Will Garwood III, Anne and Tom Conner, Emily and Peter Hempel, Will Conner, Sally and Calvin Garwood and many Clayton cousins. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Nancy Peterkin; her brothers and sisters-in law and their children; John and Gail Peterkin, Julie Peterkin, Susan Peterkin, Lynn Peterkin, John and Nora Watson, and Hannah and Jeff McManus.

At her death Susan served on the boards of Glenwood Cemetery Historic Preservation Foundation and Episcopal High School. She was a member of The Garden Club of Houston, The Discussion Group, the Clayton Library Friends, Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church and the American Leadership Forum. Clubs Susan belonged to included The Assembly, the Bayou Club of Houston, Bolero and River Oaks Country Club.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from four o’clock in the afternoon until six o’clock in the evening on Friday, the 5th of January, in the parlor & grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A memorial service is to be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 6th of January, at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, 6621 S. Main Street in Houston.

Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery.

Susan cherished her many friendships which spanned multiple age groups. Her love for her heritage was surpassed only by the love of her children. She had great pride and confidence in the next generation.
