It was on a hot lazy African morning on November 11, 1940, that a ray of sunshine came into the world in the form of Sunday Olufunmilola Fadulu. Sunday was born to the late William Cornelius Fadulu and Ruth Olubowale nee Olumade in Ibadan, Nigeria. He was the eldest boy of eight children. Sunday became a Christian at an early age under the mentorship of Baptist Missionaries to Africa led by Reverend Burt and Ruth Dyson, Jack and Doris Dyson, and Ms. Chief Alma Rohm (99 years old). It was apparent that Sunday was an exceptional student, when his father, superintendent of schools at Abeokuta Baptist Boys High School, used him as an example for the higher grades. Sunday was later chosen by the Nigerian government as one of five students from the whole country to study in the U.S. He was sent to Houston to integrate into Baylor College. However, the vote was that the student body voted (yes) the faculty voted (no), so Sunday was on to Oklahoma Baptist University instead, where he met, later lived with and loved Kenneth and Nell Eyers of Oklahoma Baptist University (Elizabeth, Julia, Paul). Later Sunday moved on to the University of Oklahoma to complete his Doctorate. In 1966, he was named Independent Student of The Year. While at O.U. he met and married the love of his life, Jacqueline Counter Fadulu. They were married 54 years. Together they had three children: Sunday Jr.,Tony, and Jeannie. In 1972 Sunday accepted a position as Assistant Professor at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, where he was a world-renowned microbiologist and became affectionately known as “The Einstein of Africa''. To his acclaim, he discovered a treatment for sickle cell anemia. At his passing, he was in the process of making it available to the world.
God called Sunday home on March 3, 2022, and we miss already. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Olufunmilakin and Olufunmilade, and his sisters: Olufunmiladun Odusote and Olubola Wilfred, his nieces and nephews. Sunday is survived by his sisters: Folabomi Giwa and Olushola Ikuorowo, nieces and nephew, and great-nieces and nephews; his loving wife, Jacqueline Francille Counter Fadulu, and their three children: Sunday Olufunmilola Jr. born in Ogbomosho, Nigeria (wife, Van Thanh Tran, children, André and Maya), Tony Olubamidele born in Oklahoma, and Jeannie Olubowale born in Houston, Texas (husband, Michael Williams Jr., and son, Tre).
