If sharks could sleep, they'd be resting a little easier today. Steve Gustava Honc, the shark fishing legend of the South Texas Coast, passed away on March 1, 2023, following a hard-fought battle with illness.
Steve was born in Galveston on November 5, 1948, and grew up in Somerset, TX, where he graduated from Somerset High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked in the National Elevator Trade until retiring.
And could he fish! Every opportunity, he was up and down the South Texas coast earning his reputation as an Old Guard fisherman and a member of the Boca Chica Beach Legends. His passion was shark fishing, and he was notorious for building some of the best fishing rods on the coast.
Seven years ago, Steve was reunited with his childhood sweetheart Becky Clifton. They had originally met at Garner State Park in 1965, but fate reunited them decades later and they were married in 2016. She's been by his side ever since.
He is survived by wife Becky Clifton, sister Diane Wanjura and her husband Warren, sister Christine Travis, brother Billy Honc and his wife Darleen; 3 children-Michelle Honc in Florida, Stephanie Simpson in the Texas valley, Dyan Honc-his youngest who he nickname "Shark Bait", and also 3 Grandchildren.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents Steve and Marguerite Honc and brother-in-law Fred Travis.
