It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen Christian Quell, who peacefully departed on February 15, 2024, at the age of 73, in his Cypress, TX home, surrounded by his devoted family, including his surviving spouse of 44 years, Ledecia M. Quell. Stephen was born on July 18, 1950, in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City, to Henry Quell (deceased in 2009) and Patricia Pollak Quell (deceased in 2015). He is survived by his loving siblings, Susan Bowman (husband Ray) and Fred Quell.
Stephen pursued his education at Sam Houston University, Southwest Texas University, and the University of Houston, diligently working towards his Master’s degree. During his college years, he was an active member of the Sigma Chi Chapter. Throughout his career, Stephen passionately served as a History Teacher, specializing in Special Education and ESL. He also dedicated his time to coaching Soccer and Track and Field. Additionally, he obtained a Realtor's License in Houston, TX, working alongside his beloved wife.
Stephen’s hobbies included traveling to beaches, indulging in water resorts, and enjoying roller coasters at amusement parks. He served as a Sigma Chi Advisor with Southwest Texas University, collected stamps, and was an avid fan of the Three Stooges and Looney Tunes. Notably, he volunteered as Santa’s helper for the past decade. Stephen remained active for as long as his health permitted, always maintaining his unwavering Christian faith.
He is survived by his four children, John Garcia (wife Heather), Melanie Vijarro (husband Lee), Heather Casada, and Bethany Sanchez (husband Roy), along with eight grandchildren, Angel Vijarro, Staff Sergeant Lee Vijarro III, Dazie Sanchez, Seth Sanchez, Cade Sanchez, Amber (Kai) Garcia, Tristen Casada, Crystal (Jackie) Garcia and one great grandchild Nova Sanchez. He is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Stephen's dedicated caregivers at Harbor Hospice Group, as well as to Melissa and Albert Montalvo, Oscar Montalvo, and Maria Balderas for their unwavering support.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024, commencing with family visitation at 6 PM, followed by services at 7 PM, at Brookside Funeral Home Cypress Creek, located at 9149 Highway 6 North, Houston, TX 77095.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a charity of your choice in honor of Stephen’s memory.
