Steve was born in Pomona, California to Durkee and Lyle Boyd and preceded in death by his sister Sandra Boyd Pierce and his parents. He attended public schools in Pomona and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). At UCLA he was president of his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, was active in intramural sports, and a member of the Kelps. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962, he served for two years aboard the USS St. Paul as a deck and gunnery officer. He then headed to the East Coast to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with an MBA in 1966.
His long and distinguished career in finance spanned 40 years in portfolio management, managing equities for financial institutions and later also managing retail mutual funds. Prior to retirement in 2007, he served as president and chief investing officer of Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM), then as head of global research for all of MSIM. Post retirement from Morgan Stanley, Steve served on the Board of Directors of The Motley Fool group of funds. Steve will be remembered as a mentor and a trusted friend to many.
Steve was a true Renaissance man with many and varied interests that included books, travel, music, fine wine, and music. He was also, at heart, a true collector, with a passion for collecting modern fiction first editions, 18th century naval memorabilia, Chinese porcelain, and fine wines. He was equally as enthusiastic and passionate about traveling the world, his curiosity and zest for life taking him and his wife Vinnie to the four corners of the globe. The year after his retirement he planned an adventure to explore and sample the wines of the Southern Hemisphere that took them over the course of a year to South America, Australia, and South Africa. His ready wit and quick smile resulted in lasting friendships throughout the world.
In 1973, Steve married Lavinia Price, the love of his life with whom he spent 43 wonderful years. Because of his career, the early years were spent living on the East Coast, primarily in New York, Boston, and Connecticut, but in 1989, a job change brought them to Houston, a homecoming for Vinnie and halfway to Steve’s native California. Life in Houston was rich with friends and a satisfying career, but upon retirement, they built a home on their farm near Brenham, Texas and became fulltime residents of Washington County.
Survivors include his wife, Vinnie; son, Mitchell Boyd and his wife Deborah of Edgewater, Maryland; daughter, Susan Lerry and her husband Brian of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Austin and Madison Boyd, both of Edgewater, Maryland; nephews, David Pierce and Matthew Pierce, both of Phoenix, Arizona; and brother-in-law, Steven Price of Tijeras, New Mexico.
A reception is to be held from three until five o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 5th of March in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive. Come celebrate Steve and raise a glass of wine in his memory.
In lieu of customary remembrances the family kindly suggests contributions be directed to the STEPHEN L. AND LAVINIA BOYD FUND FOR LEUKEMIA RESEARCH for the research by Dr. Borje Andersson, C/O the Development Office, MD Anderson Cancer Center, P. O. Box 301439, Houston, Texas 77250-1439.
