Standlee C. (Stan) Fulfer, entered into rest on December 24, 2016. He was born October 28, 1932 at Gray County Texas in the North Texas Panhandle. He moved to Dimmitt, Texas in 1938. Graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1950. Moved to Houston in 1950 to attend Rice Institute (now Rice “U”), on an athletic scholarship to play basketball. One of his more memorable and rewarding experiences was working for Brown & Root in the summer of 1951 in Alaska helping build a new railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks. As a laborer, driving spikes for fourteen weeks, seven days per week, he learned a lasting lesson in discipline and hard work.
Upon graduation from Rice in 1955, he received his Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers. He reported for active duty at the Engineers Center at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. After completion of the officer’s basic training, he was transferred to Fort Carson, Colorado to complete his two-year active duty commitment. He was assigned to the 502nd Engineer Group of the 9th Division, where he was promoted to the Administrative Officer of that group. He was assigned to a special project, the Continental Army Command exercise at Camp Hale, Colorado testing artillery movement with the new H-34 Sikorsky helicopters vs. the Old Army Mule Unit. Sadly, the end result was the de-activation of the Mule Unit. Upon the de-activation of the 502nd Engineer Group, he was transferred to the 9th Division Headquarters and assigned several special projects for the Commander, Gen. Harry Storke. His last project was to build the U.S. Army Museum at Fort Carson. Upon completion and opening in three and one-half months, he received a Certificate of Achievement Award from Gen. Storke. He received his honorable discharge in 1957 and returned to Houston to begin work in the construction industry.
His first job was with Johnson Construction Specialties. He worked in their acoustical ceiling and roof deck departments. In 1961 he went to work for Mr. Shelton W. Greer, where he was in charge of the roof deck division. He was involved in the Vermiculite plant and other parts of the overall S.W. Greer Co., Inc. and Vermiculite Products, Inc. He was promoted to President of both corporations and became the owner in 2000.
During those years he served as Chairman of the Advisory Board of Directors of the A.G.C. Houston Chapter. He was also elected to the Advisory Board of the Vermiculite Institute and W.R. Grace and Co’s. construction products division. He served many years on the AGC board of Harris County Appraisal District.
He was a life member of the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Association and served on the Quarter Horse Committee for many years. He was elected the first President and Chairman of the Greater Houston Quarter Horse Association. During that period, he and his wife Betty, became involved in the quarter horse business. They were active in owning, breeding, training and showing quarter horses throughout the country. They won many Grand Champions showing their “halter” horses and first place with their Western Pleasure Horses. They owned two horse ranches in the Cypress, Texas area.
Stan and Betty were strong believers in Christianity recognizing God the Father, as Creator of heaven and earth and Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior.
Stan is survived by his wife, Betty. He is also survived by son, Mitch and wife Susan, son Mike and his wife Karen, and daughter Terry Lynn and husband Jeff Lange and three grandchildren; Haley, Paige, and Mitchell.
