Spencer M. Wong

With deep sorrow and profound love, the family of Spencer Wong, 69, announce his unexpected passing on January 17, 2022. While growing up in Hong Kong, the life of a Texas rancher captivated Spencer and he dreamed of one day owning his own countryside property. In pursuit of his dream, he made his way to Texas for education and career opportunities. Spencer graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1975 with a degree in Biochemistry and also earned his MBA from the same institution.

Spencer joined Price Waterhouse & Co (PW) in 1978 and became a partner in 1992. He retired from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) after more than thirty years of celebrated leadership and excellence in 2011. Looking back on his career that encompassed the United States, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong, he was most proud to have had the honor of mentoring hundreds of junior colleagues – many of whom went on to become distinguished leaders in their own right.

Upon returning to Texas, he traded in his corporate attire of monogrammed dress shirts, designer suits, and Oxford shoes for outdoorsman shirts, classic Levi blue jeans, and rugged boots. Living out his dream of owning his own Texas ranch, he happily drove his Kubota tractor, tended to his garden, and raised a plethora of animals. On his ranch, he looked after cows, horses, chickens, ducks, and geese. He was most delighted in caring for his herd of Texas Longhorns - his alma mater’s iconic mascot. His gardening led to inundating many a relatives’ refrigerators with an abundance of various oversized vegetables. At family gatherings, he enthusiastically shared news of baby animals born on the ranch or new gardening techniques he was trying out. While not on the ranch, Spencer kept up to date with the latest Apple tech, enjoyed listening to the greatest musical hits of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, frequently watched world history documentaries, and was a voracious reader of international affairs. However, what Spencer cherished most during his retirement was spending quality time with his family after a long and illustrious career abroad.

Spencer is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Cecilia; son, Johnny, his wife, Nita, and grandchildren, Evan and Alex; daughter Evelyn; and son Ian. Spencer is also survived by his brother, Philip, his wife, Maisie, and his nephews and niece, Sam, Adele, and Tim; his sister, Celina, her husband, Eric, and niece, Christabel.

A service will be held at the Memorial Oak Funeral Home & Cemetery in the R.L. Waltrip Texas Liberty Mausoleum on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. Officiating the service is Father Roger Zhang of Ascension Chinese Mission (Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The University of Texas MD Cancer Center or to the Ascension Chinese Mission (Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston).
