Sophi was born in Anchorage Alaska in 1961 to Reverend Bobbye and Fannie Ross and has two siblings. She attended high school at Service Hansen High in Alaska until her family relocated to Houston in 1978. She completed high school at Aldine High school in 1980. While at Aldine, Sophi created lots of memorable friendships. One special friendship being Sharon whom she kept a tight bond with until the end of life. She was described as being kind, funny, lover of God, sweet, special...I can go on but one description that stood out was “one of a kind”, and I agree.
She went on to attend North Harris Community College, majoring in accounting. She transferred to the Texas College of Medical and Dental Careers majoring in Medical Business and Billing. Upon graduation she externed with Dr. B.K. Roy before becoming a full-time employee for 15 years working as a medical biller. There she gained another special friendship with Debbie. In 2000 she began working at Baylor College of Medicine working as a financial counselor until she retired in 2016.
In 1993 Sophi met the greatest love of her life, Joe Thomas through a mutual friend. Eager to start their new lives together, the two were married September 17, 1994. Collectively Sophi and Joe had four children. She was a devoted wife and mother. Extremely loyal, supportive, and loved unconditionally.
Although she cherished her family, Sophi’s favorite role was being a grandparent to her 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Her smile never left her face when she was around them. She treasured every moment and loved being their granny!
Everyone who knew Sophi knew how much she truly loved the Lord.
In 1974 Sophia gave her life to Christ and was baptized at Greater Friendship Baptist Church which was the 1st Baptist church ever organized in the entire state of Alaska. All other Baptist churches in Alaska originated from Greater Friendship Baptist under Charlie Dargon, Pastor. After moving to Houston, she remained active in the church over the years with her final church home becoming Grace Church in which she became an active member in December 2020.
Sophi loved to talk, laugh, cook, watch cooking shows, decorate, and read the bible. She will always be remembered for her genuine love for people, her smile that lit up the room, and the way she loved.
Sophi was preceded in death by Reverend Bobbye Ross (father) and Destiny Thomas (granddaughter). She is survived by Joe Thomas (husband), Tonya Thomas-Glaster (Roy Jr) (daughter)), Brian Thomas (Helda) (son)), Erich Ross (son), Brandon Thomas (son), Fannie Ross (mother), Monique King (sister), Keith Ross (brother). Grandchildren: Michole, Nicholas (Moesha), Chlorisa (Dexter), Roy III, and Elijah. Great-grandchildren: Kennedi, Ryleigh, Noah, Malcolm, Josiah, and Mary Rose. And a host of family members, and close friends.
Sophi also leaves behind a fur baby, Gracie who because of Sophi is super sweet but spoiled rotten! LOL.
A memorial service for Sophia will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025 from 10:AM to 12:00 PM.
