Arrangements under the directioShirley Bart McCarthy, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend peacefully and faithfully departed for heaven on the 9th of December 2010 at home surrounded by her family after a very brief and heroic battle with cancer. Shirley was born on the 17th of August 1932 in Dallas, Texas, but Houston was her home. Shirley attended The Kinkaid School and graduated from Lamar High School. She also attended the University of Texas and remained a loyal fan throughout her life. In fact, some of her favorite times were spent in her den with her favorite dog by her side, watching her Longhorns or any of her other favorite teams, surrounded by her kids and grandkids. Shirley was an avid tennis player and card player and loved games of all kinds. She adored being outdoors, whether it was floating down the Guadalupe River by her beloved Camp Mystic or riding the waves in the Gulf of Mexico. She loved to entertain, especially for her family, and her famous potato rolls and birthday cake were cherished at family meals. She loved her family deeply and they adored spending time with their Ganny. She had friends from all walks of life and of all ages, whether from her neighborhood, her poker groups, her boat groups, or her church, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, where she regularly attended mass for over fifty years.
Shirley was preceded in death, by her husband, the late James A. McCarthy, and by her mother, Ann Bart. She is survived by her children, Tom McCarthy and wife Julie, Jim McCarthy and wife Maura, Ben McCarthy and wife Tina, Anne McCarthy Britt and husband Will, Patrick McCarthy and wife Vickie, Janet McCarthy Fosdick and husband John, Louisa McCarthy Grover and husband Courtney. Ganny’s grandchildren are Bryce McCarthy, Brax McCarthy, Emma McCarthy, Megan McCarthy, Matt McCarthy, Jennifer McCarthy Perez and husband Alex, Blake McCarthy, Kate McCarthy, Harris Britt and wife Kristin, Bailey Britt, Kelley Britt, James Britt, Melanie McCarthy, Maureen McCarthy, Clare McCarthy, Patrick McCarthy, Mary Kelly McCarthy, John Fosdick, David Fosdick, Anna Fosdick, Katie Fosdick, Blake Fosdick, McKayle Grover, Molly Grover, and Georgia Grover.
