Shirley Kirk, the namesake of Shirley Kirk Elementary School in Cy-Fair ISD, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2015. Shirley taught home economics early on in her 39 year career but spent most of her time teaching middle school science. She taught in both Bellville and Cy-Fair. Education was a great passion of hers and Shirley could often be heard promoting, praising, and even defending today’s teachers and students. It was the great honor of her life to be selected as namesake for a school, an honor earned not just by her many years of service in the classroom but her innumerable hours of volunteer work on behalf of Cy-Fair teachers and students.
Shirley was born in Little River, Texas on October 8, 1930. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor and The University of Texas where she earned a master’s degree. She became an adopted Aggie, however, when she met Walter James Kirk, her husband of 49 years. Together they had two sons, Evan and James Lee. Evan and his wife Annette gave her two grandsons, Austin and Houston. James and his wife Joyce added twin granddaughters to the family, Jessica and Jenna.
Shirley was devoted to her church. She was a teacher, leader, hostess, and organist. During the past year and half that she spent in and out of hospitals as she dealt with congestive heart failure, Shirley shared her love for God with everyone she encountered.
Besides her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, and beloved grandchildren, Shirley is survived by four nieces: Leslie, Melissa, Amy, and Carol, daughters of her only brother, George Huckabee, who preceded her in death.
Visitation was held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Waltrip Funeral Directors. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16th, at Jersey Village Baptist Church, 16518 Jersey Drive. Reverend Kirby Follis, officiated.
