Shirley Crowe was born on December 5th, 1931 in Combs, Arkansas. He died February 24th, 2024 in Crosby, Texas at the age of 92. Shirley spent the majority of his growing years in Berryville, Arkansas and Houston, Texas. He graduated from Aldine High School in 1949.
Shirley finished his working career in 1994 after 28 years with Maxwell House Coffee. He held a number of positions at their Harrisburg Ave. plant that was visible “good to the last drop” from downtown Houston. He retired as Emergency Response Manager. He was proud to be a member of the Maxwell House family.
He pursued one of his passions while still employed and into retirement with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He served on the Parade Committee and Judging Committee. He served a term as Vice Chairman on the Parade Committee with Floats and Wagons. He concluded his activities as a Lifetime Committeeman; receiving the 2014 HLSR Bill Kurtz Service Award. He was active in the parade’s fundraising and activities. He left this earth on Parade Day 2024.
He pursued another interest into his retirement years as a member of United States of America Track and Field (USATF). He was a master track and field official and a combined event referee for USATF and NCAA. He also worked with AAU Junior Olympics and Texas UIL with site prep and venue improvement. Most of his later years were spent assisting Humble ISD with Turner Stadium, making it one of the nation’s premier track and field facilities. His efforts have had him added into many Hall of Fame classes of different organizations. He mentored many new officials by example, encouragement, knowledge, and love of the sport. One of his highlights was working with the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia in the heptathlon and decathlon. He worked with track and field into his nineties until lack of mobility made it too difficult to continue.
Shirley leaves a host of family, companions, co-workers, and friends to miss him, He lived a full life and we thank you for honoring his memory. There will be no public visitation or services at this time. Interment will be private.
