Shirley Mason Crain, born on October 13, 1921, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2014. Shirley was the daughter of Lillian Boyd and William Weldon Mason, of Waco. She graduated from Waco High School and attended Baylor University, where she met her husband, Thomas Milton Crain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Milton, her sisters Betsy Marshall, Inky Stringer, Modine Exum, her brother, Weldon “Speedy” Mason, her granddaughter-in-law, Dawn Williams Trozzo, and her great grandson, Sam Trozzo.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Marion Kraft, of Dallas, her daughters, Carolyn Trozzo and her husband Ernie, Cheryl Young and her husband Bob, of Pattison, and Jan Scott. She is also survived by her son,Tom Crain and his wife Mary, of Corpus Christi.
Shirley is also survived by ten grandchildren: Clay Trozzo, Matt Trozzo and his wife Jessica, Mike Trozzo and his wife Lindsey of Dallas, Melissa Young McAlpin and her husband, Shawn of Richmond, Ryan Young and his wife Lauren, Alex Scott and his wife Shu-Yi of Austin, Ashley Scott Westfall of Austin, Allison Crain Brickley and her husband, Brandon of Austin, Shannon Crain Darrough of Wilmington, North Carolina and Trey Crain of Corpus Christi.
Shirley’s surviving great grandchildren include: Jared and Payne Trozzo, Jace, Annie and Travis Trozzo, Taylor, Maddie and Ellie McAlpin, Chase and Cate Young, Euna and Lydie Scott and Shirley Westfall. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley Crain, affectionately known as “Grandmother” or “Granny” was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her love for her family was evidenced by all. She loved art, music, dance, cheerleading, sports and anything else her family was involved in, especially baseball and football, and supported her husband, children and grandchildren in all their endeavors. Her passion for antiques was quite evident in the trappings of her home and the gifts she provided for her family. Shirley loved to entertain her family and always made the holidays a special time of year.
Shirley’s family would like to give a special thanks to May Cole and her Autumn Years’ staff for providing care for Shirley during her last years. In addition, Shirley’s family would like to thank Veria Wilson and Estella Scott for their devotion and loving care.
A long time member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, she loved the Lord and is resting with Him now. A graveside service was held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, 77079, on April 17, 2014. Deacon Al Vacek, of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, presided. Pall bearers were Clay Trozzo, Matt Trozzo, Mike Trozzo, Ryan Young, Alex Scott and Trey Crain. Readers were Allison Crain Brickley, Melissa Young McAlpin, Matt Trozzo and Clay Trozzo. “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace” were performed by Lindsey Trozzo and Bob Young. Euna and Lydie Scott played some of their great-grandmother’s favorite selections on their cellos during a family luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, in memory of Shirley.
