Shirley Florence Avedon, daughter of Florence (Hagen) and Frederick B. Young, was born on August 10, 1928 in Washington DC. She moved to New Haven, CT at an early age and graduated from Hamden High School and Larson College (Quinnipiac University). Shirley married Bruce Avedon in 1951 and had two children, Linda M. and Bruce F.
Shirley spent several years in the banking industry in New Haven before being married. After being stationed in several communities during the Korean War, the family resided in Shrewsbury, MA from 1954 to 1968 where Shirley was an active member of the Artemis Ward Chapter Order of Eastern Star (Stella Chapter) and a member of the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury. In 1969, the family moved to Cincinnati, OH where Shirley was an active volunteer with Maddox Elementary School, Anderson Middle School of Forest Hills School District, The Welcome Wagon, and Anderson Hills United Methodist Church. In 2005, Shirley and Bruce moved to Houston, TX to be closer to their son, Bruce. Shirley and family are members of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Houston, TX. She will be most remembered as a great storyteller, homemaker, devoted wife, and mother.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Linda; and son, Bruce, both of Houston, TX. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the many caregivers who took such great care of Shirley over the past 15 years.
