My dad and I had so many meaningful times together throughout the years. Several of those moments included a soundtrack of my father’s making. Growing up we heard anything from Nat King Cole to Aretha Franklin, Steve Miller Band, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and everything in between. In the later years, we heard the likes of Joe Bonamassa, J.J. Cale, and he surprised us with some modern Top 40 Hits in rotation.

Throughout the years, we would share new and old tunes with each other and the family, both virtually and in person. He was often surprised at the music that I had found on my own, especially if it was before my time or a genre that he didn’t expect me to like. I was quick to remind him that he and mom helped to lay a very important musical foundation for us and that his openness to listen to and try new things was critical to my own musical journey.

On occasions when we were lucky enough to be together in person, I can’t tell you the number of times that our jam sessions turned into full blown late night living room dance parties, even if we were the only two dancing. That’s another thing about my pops, he was ALWAYS up to dance and he encouraged me to do the same. It didn’t matter if I felt embarrassed or silly, eventually I was willing to look past that just so I could see the smile on his face, hold his hands, and sway back and forth to the music together. Little did he know this would evolve into a lifelong love of dancing and music, of course.

Music is perhaps the thing that my dad and I bonded over the most, especially while we were both adults. I am forever thankful for his gift of music, among countless other things. In my mind, we will forever be dancing together in my parent's living room.

I love you always, always, pop!

There are so many great things to say about Scott. He was a wonderful father to his kids, husband to Ginny, and friend to everyone. He was thoughtful, willing to give much of his time to help others, passionate about many types of music, fun to be around, insightful, and funny. 

At Emily’s 30th birthday, I witnessed all these characteristics.  Most of the family and I went to The Skylark Lounge which is a classic blues club in Austin. It was fun to watch him dance with Emily and get into the music. He’s a man who could live in the moment. The next morning, he cleaned up after the birthday celebration at Emily’s apartment, without being asked, because he wanted to make sure his little girl’s place was in order before they left town. Scott, you will be missed, but never forgotten.

Scott was such a spiritual, compassionate, 
kindhearted, caring, respectful, loving, amazing husband and father. 
The love he had for his wife, children and family was remarkable. He showed us all how to live life to the fullest and to give back to others. 
Scott will forever remain in our hearts and his spirit will always be felt, we will miss him dearly. 
May you all find faith, strength and comfort and embrace all the love and support from people who hold you close in their hearts.

Words are not sufficient to tell you or others how I feel about you, or how you made me and others feel. You were always an incurable optimist, and that rubbed off on my always seeing the bright side of every situation. Your caring and compassionate nature made you an amazing father to your kids, and a loving husband to your wife. You were always willing to listen to our perspective and shed lite on what ever we were going through. You were slow to anger, and quick to forgive, which is fortunate because we screwed up a lot. You taught me the character of a man is not judged by what he has accomplished, or what his bank account is, but how he treats those around him. I will always hold you close to my heart, as will all those who knew you. I cant believe all the love you gave, and memories shared. You are a class act through and through. This is not good bye, but ill see you. Im proud of you!

Always a great time in Grand Forks. I love this picture of Dad and Scott. I was truly blessed to have Scott as a brother-in-law. I am thankful for all the memories our families made together. Our girls had a very special bond with Uncle Scott and had so many great times together. He will always be in our hearts. We love you, Scott.

I met Scott shortly after Danny and I became friends in high school. At that time in my life, I was used to most adults treating me like a little kid who didn't know anything and whose thoughts and opinions weren't important. One of the first things I remember about Scott is that he never made me feel that way. He always treated me with respect and like an adult. He always tried to speak to me at my level without making me feel belittled or patronized. He was the first adult to call me "dude" and I always thought he was the coolest dad for that. He always seemed to make an effort to talk like his kids and their friends talked and I appreciated his attempt to connect in that way. I will always remember Scott for his kindness and for making people feel welcome and included around him. You will be greatly missed.

I know nothing brought you more pleasure than spending time with your family. You always brought the fun, your sense of humor, and your love of music to our family gatherings.

My heart aches in your absence. I felt your love everyday and I am comforted by the love we shared.

I never had to doubt if I had dad’s support. He believed in me long before I ever believed in myself.

When I was making the decision to move to NYC, Mom, dad and I were discussing my move to the big apple. Dad said selfishly I want you to stay here, but I wouldn’t be loving you well and I would be holding you back from your dreams if I had you stay. Thank you for showing me sacrificial love dad.  

I am going to miss being able to call dad to talk about whatever. Dad took an interest in his families interests. For me that was our shared faith, Astros baseball (aka, Sportsball), cooking and music.

Dad’s love of music never wavered, even during his last two weeks of life. One night at the hospital he was playing some of our songs we had sent him. What a sweet memory to hold his hand and sing along to those songs. Those songs and that moment will be forever with me. 

I love you Papa Bear Lyche! You were a fantastic dad and brought much joy to my life. Thank you for showing me what it means to love sacrificially, to put others needs before yourself, to be patient, and kind. You’re earthly attributes point me to our Heavenly Father, with whom you now are with. As revelation 21:4 says “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, or crying, or pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

My heart aches in your absence. I didn’t know I could feel pain this great. The positive ways you’ve impacted my life and the strength of our shared faith allows me to trust that we will be together always. You were courageous in your cancer journey and I am so proud of you, just like you communicated to us over all these years. 

I will miss the yet to come moments like having a family and you being a grandpa. But I will make sure, if I am blessed with a family, that your grandkids will know who Papa Bear Lyche is, even if they have never met you.

When I think of what my wonderful father means to me, it is hard to express in words. His love was always unconditional & very generous. He worked very hard to provide for us & make us happy. He always was so encouraging & loved to give us advice, even as adults. He always told us he loved us, was proud of us & made sure to always give us hugs & kisses. 

A couple of fond childhood memories I have are of him teaching us about music & sports, both of which he loved. I remember him showing us a Houston Astros game with Nolan Ryan pitching, while we lived in Denver circa 1984. Around that time, he also showed us a cool live music show called Austin City Limits. I also remember staying at his parents home on summer vacations listening to their "old timey" records on their console stereo, learning about jazz & big band music. When we were older & had moved to Houston, he was able to take us to the Astrodome to see concerts at the Rodeo & Astros games, as well as to The Summit to see the Rockets. 

My favorite memory of him, is my wedding day. It was the first time I saw him cry. We were both sobbing before he walked me down the isle. Then he calmed my nerves before he took my arm. 

When I married Kevin, Scott gained another son. Dad always made sure to ask Kevin about his work & was truly interested in what he was doing. His favorite thing to talk to Kevin about was sports, specifically "The Coogs." Their love of sports bound them further together. My Dad loved him very much & was a great father-in-law to Kevin, accepting him as part of the family.

Another fond memory I have is when we would be pulling out of the driveway after a visit, he & Mom would always stand in the window & watch, waving good bye & smiling. 

There are so many countless things I will miss about him, such as his humor and voice, but his love & embraces are what I will miss the most!!!

I will always carry you in my heart and mind Daddy, forever & always!!! "Until we meet again!"

I have no one favorite memory of Scott.  All my time with Scott has been great. It is funny, Scott was my father in law and people always talk about horrible in laws.  I never got that from Scott. Granted in the beginning he was not my biggest fan because I was dating his baby girl Melissa.  But, I grew on him and when he offered me a Miller High Life, well Mel said he likes you.  It was however a simple gesture after my dad died that meant so much. It  was at my father's celebration of life, I was spent. Scott came up put his hand on my shoulder, nothing really said. It was just his way to say I am here for you.  He then always made a point to say he was proud of me, like I was his kid.
It was how Scott was, just a good decent man.  I will miss him.

I first met Mr. Lyche at Danny's 30th birthday party. He was very welcoming and loved the fact that I lived in the midwest when I moved to the US. I enjoyed chatting with him and getting to know him and his family. He spoke very fondly of his family, and he made sure to express how proud he was of them. 

My favorite memory of Mr. Lyche was at Danny's 31st birthday party where he taught me how to play corn hole. I had played it less than a handful of times in my life, so I was pretty bad at my throws. He spent  over an hour teaching me how to properly throw the bags. His patience was incredible as there were a few times where the bags ended up in the neighbors lawn. He not once made me feel bad about my awful throws, and managed to make light hearted jokes and remind me to not take it seriously. I appreciated him making me feel welcome and included. He was a genuine, kind hearted and loving man. I am honored to have had the opportunity to have met him.

My deepest sympathies sent to you all. Losing a dad, spouse , uncle, cousin, friend, no matter what age we are,  is never easy. I always remember Scott smiling and laughing and his strong unwavering faith. We didn’t see each other often, but when we did he always made me feel as if no time had passed. He was so incredibly kind. I am sending you all so many hugs and much love. Talk about him often, remember all the great times, keep his smile and light moving forward in all of you ❤️

I have always enjoyed having my family come back to Minnesota and to the family cabin. I know I own it now but it is still the family cabin. We all grew up there, learned to swim, learned to ski, and sometimes stay on the tube no matter how hard I tried dumping people off. We brought boyfriends and girlfriends to the lake, got married, moved away, had kids, but every so often we come together as a family at the cabin. I remember the last time the Lyche clan made it back.  We had renovated our old pontoon into a “Fighting Sioux” pontoon in honor of the best college hockey team in the country.  Most of us looked forward to winter just because that meant going to UND hockey games, not freezing our butts off or shoveling until our backs gave out.  So it was a tribute to a team we grew up with and loved.  I was proud to show the pontoon off and happy everyone jumped at the chance to go for a ride around the lake.  We loaded up, life jackets, sunscreen, snacks, and of course beverages.  We decided to stop back in the bay and do some swimming and sunbathing. A beautiful day to be at the lake.  As time went by, the snacks were eaten, the beverages drank, and the thought of a bathroom lingered.  So yes, we will head back to the cabin. We pull up anchor, get everyone seated, and I turn the key. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I frantically fiddle with the controls and turn the key again, still nothing!  I called to the cabin to see if Nik Hovind had arrived yet.  He hadn’t but was close and he could bring out the boat and tow us home.  I sat apologizing to everyone and in typical Scott Lyche fashion I was informed we had not quite ran out of beverages and this gave us more time to visit.   That was Scott, and that was family, his  most precious possession. 

Uncle Scott loved spending time with his family, good music, a good story and a good meal. I admired that about him- his ability to appreciate the small bursts of happiness rather than chasing things to make him happy. 
I remember as a kid riding in the car with him (probably with a load of other cousins) and the song Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel came on. Your dad jammed out, drumming on the steering wheel and singing loudly. He was so joyful! Whenever I hear that song, I immediately think of that moment and the sheer fun of it all. I hope you have lots of songs and stories to hold onto. He lives on in all those memories. ♥️ Sending you all love.

I am so very, very sorry for your loss.  I know how much he loved you and how much you loved him.  I also know how much  you  will  miss him.  I am so glad you have such wonderful  family memories.
I met Scott and Ginny when they came over to discuss the reception for Kevin's and Melissa's wedding. It could have been an awkward meeting but was not because Scott and my husband David shared the same offbeat sense of humor. In subsequent years, I came to know Scott as a smart, kind and funny man  who deeply loved his family.  I am so glad that I had the opportunity to know 
him. 

I met Scott when I was 7 years old, and from that time he always treated me with the utmost kindness and respect. Being the youngest in the group, he naturally referred to me as "Uncle Paul".  

Scott was a silly man who always seemed to be trying to make people smile. He was probably the happiest person I have ever met— I don't think I have ever seen him without a smile on his face and a joke on standby. It seemed that he had found the secret of happiness and contentedness and made it his life's goal to spread that with the world. 

Every positive trait I see in my my oldest friend Dan I can see in his father. Scott was one of the best people I ever knew and he left the world better than he found it.

I first remember Mr. Lyche from my childhood while playing on the same soccer team as Emily. He was always so supportive and enthusiastic on the sidelines, cheering us on throughout the entire game. I got to know him better throughout my years in high school, and he was such a kind and friendly person. Mr. Lyche was always welcoming and inviting to anyone who was spending time in his home. After I graduated college and after a year into working at my job, Mr. Lyche actually helped me with the sale of the first car I ever bought. He was so patient with me and was so persistent to help me get exactly what I wanted and was so helpful through the whole process. Mr. Lyche was a wonderful, sweet, and genuine person and I know he will be truly missed.

As we all attended Scott’s services it was apparent that all who knew him  agreed that Scott was a family man, a  kind man, a jump right in and help kind of guy.  When thinking back, I don’t ever remember Scott without a smile on his face.  I never heard him  angry or down in the dumps.  His positive, joyful attitude was contagious.  We will miss him, that is for certain, but I am sure he would want us to continue living our  lives  as family , as friends, as new acquaintances  just like he did.  Yes, Scott was a good man.  And some day we will meet up again. I look forward  to that! Until then,  Scott, watch over your family as I know you are, and sometimes drop them a hint of your heavenly presence, it would make their day!  

Scott was one of the first people I met when I moved to Houston. He was always so friendly. And he allowed our son to spend a lot of time at his house! Scott was a great neighbor and friend. They don’t make them like him anymore.

The worlds list of really great dudes lost a really important member. The Lyches are in my thoughts.

As I spoke with my adult children to inform them about the loss of Scott, they unanimously said the same thing.... "he was such a nice guy". We ALL know that and feel the same way, he set the bar pretty high. I have so many great memories and will miss hearing him refer to me as "uncle Jay".

Regardless of how busy, crowded, or chaotic our family events were, Scott made it a point to make time for each and every one in attendance. I admired how he connected, not just with the adults, but with all the children as well. He had a way of making everyone  feel included, and always had a way of making you smile and laugh.

I don't know why, but one memory that stuck with me goes back many, many years ago at the lake. It may have even been related to my first exposure of Doritos tortilla chips. We were at the lake and someone had brought a bag of Nacho Cheese flavored Doritos (a hit then and now). Scott kept referring to them, pronouncing the name sounding like "Knock-o cheese" rather than the normal "nacho". I think he was joking, but I'm not 100% sure, either way, it stuck, and even today, whenever I see a bag, I think of Scott and of course, all of my kids have heard me refer to them as "Knock-O cheese" at some point in their lives. I plan to continue this with my grandchildren, sorta my way of honoring my fond memories of Scott. He was a good man, a great husband to my sister, and a wonderful father.

When I meet Mr. Scott I was working at the reception desk and every time he had a customer he was always so sweet and kind. I remember telling my self every body should be more like him. When I started doing sales I had the pleasure to know him better. 
He always asked me about my boys, and he was  so nice and caring always giving me encouraging words that a single mother like me needed. 
He always talked about his wonderful family and I can see and feel how much he love them. 
He is a person I will always remember with lots of respect.

When I first met Scott at the dealership, he was unlike many of the others. He always spoke about how "Ginny and I" were doing something with the kids. He was one of the only people that I could turn to and get advice and he was always very calm and collected. He would always spare a minute or two to just talk or give advice. My deepest condolences to Scott's family and closest friends. We have certainly lost a true angel within our ranks. 

Love and prayers for the Lyche family. Scott was a person I considered a friend. He love for his family mirrored my own. He loved sharing details of his time with them. Trips to Austin or North Dakota.  He was kind, gentle and missed from the moment he could not work. So here to Scott and the yellow plastic cup with soup and crackers for lunch.

I worked with Scott for only a couple months here at the car dealership. From the moment I started I immediately noticed how many of my coworkers were drawn to Scott. Be that sitting by him as we waited outside or just conversing with him in the lobby. Shortly after starting I got the opportunity to speak with Scott about boxing (being that he lived through the greatest years of boxing), and he told me how he remembered seeing Muhammad Ali on TV and radio. This was so amazing to hear from someone who experienced that. This lead to talking about life. And that conversation lead to how even though he lived his era, he believed the best time was “the now”. He told me how sharing time with his wife, kids, and grandchildren was second to nothing he’d experienced. Thank you Scott, a conversation and more than anything “a moral of the the story”, that I’ll always remember. God is good and now you’re with him! And to his family, he is still your husband, your father, your grandfather, but now your Guardian Angel as well. A purpose that I know he will always fulfill and cherish.

Scott was a wonderful coworker and friend. I always enjoyed his stories about outings with his family. He was kind to everyone he met. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family. 

I always considered Scott a friend and enjoyed my time with him over the years.   He was one of the nicest people I have ever known and I will certainly miss him.  Prayers and condolences to his family.

My deepest condolences for the loss of a wonderful, kind, and generous man who brought a warm and gentle energy to any room he was in. When I think of Scott, the first images that come to mind are him lugging boxes into the first house Emily and I shared together in Austin. I don't think he was never expected to help - especially given his busy work schedules - but he would always be there, without fail. After the apartment fire displaced Emily and me, Scott was there right away to help us with logistics, but also with a genuine message of positivity (and maybe a beer). Beyond being an incredible husband, father, and friend ready to give his time and energy to his loved ones (and all of their loved ones), my favorite images of Papa Lyche come from the countless hours I spent at the Lyche household during summers and winter breaks from college. Many times when I showed up to hang out with Emily, Scott had thrown SNL on tv or classic rock n roll on the speakers and we'd wind up just listening to his stories and sharing respective loves of film and music. Once the lively conversations had quieted down and Emily and I would go off to do our own thing, it was almost always a guarantee to catch Scott in full relaxation, snoring and sprawled out on the floor with late night talk shows or music still on once we came back to the house.  It always tickled me and I'm grateful I was able to witness such wholesome moments. 

Those two images - a selfless family man dedicated to making life as happy and carefree as possible for others and a young at heart, music aficionado (and lover of floor naps) - will live on in my mind as a beautiful portrayal of Scott as a person. My heart is with all of the Lyches during this difficult time. Sending my love to y'all every day.

Scott was so loved by everyone he met. He was such a good Husband, Dad, and friend. All he ever talked about was his wife and. kids. 

He would always start out with, “Ginny and I”. He loved taking her on lunch dates while running errands. He would talk about the kids always. He was so proud of all of them. His wife Ginny was his best friend...loved her completely. 

But nothing mattered more to him than family. When he was here, he would out work many. He was driven and motivated to provide for them all. He would always say...”Dontcha Know”!

I always enjoyed chatting with Scott as I cut his hair. His love for his family was evident and I always admired the fun they had together. He worked very hard and was honestly too nice to be a car salesman but did well at it. His marraige with Ginny was such a beautiful example of mutual sacrifice and respect. I have known and loved this precious family for almost 30 years.

Scott was just "cool" always current and up for a good time. I will always think of him when I hear the music of Ray LaMontagne, an artist he recommended. Scott will surely be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. 

Dear Melissa and all the family, 
Both Linda and I know how hard it is to lose a father. Losing your father opens a hole in your heart. You cannot refill that hole, but you mend it over time with help from friends and other family members. Here's to your Dad; he will forever be in your hearts. You can ask him anything, and at some point an answer will come. We love you and Kevin and send you both and all your family our love and understanding. 

So sorry to hear of Scott’s passing, passed couple years we have kept in contact over Facebook. Scott and I went to school together  until he jumped the river and gradation Red River. Again deepest sympathies to the entire family, many prayers.

I hadn’t seen Scott in a while but he looks just how I remember him long ago with summers at Island lake in Minnesota thoughts and Prayers to Ginny and the entire family 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️

While I didn’t get many interactions with your dad, one thing that was clear from day 1 is how much he appreciated connecting to others, even my crazy Mila dog. He was insistent that she would feel safe with him and see him as a friend. As a healthcare provider, seeing him the very first weekend he was in the hospital, it warmed my heart to see how he interacted  with the person bringing his dinner tray. He always made everyone feel “seen” and that day was no different even as he was walking into one of the hardest times of his life. He never forgot to make connections with everyone. Seeing someone like him has forever changed me.
