Sam was born on September 7, 1941 in Houston, Texas to Sam Alec Merrill, Sr. and Bernice Ludeau Merrill.
Sam graduated from Lamar High School and in 1963 he was a graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Sam became a Houston Police officer in 1964. During his career he was promoted to Lieutenant and later became Captain Sam A. Merrill, Jr. Throughout Sam’s career he worked in many different divisions within HPD; Accident Division, Tactical Unit, Burglary and Theft Division, Northeast Division, Clear Lake Division and Inspections Division. Sam retired in 2004 with 40 years of service and dedication to the citizens of the City of Houston. He was a member of the Houston Police Officers Association and The 100 Club of Houston.
Sam was a loving and devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a very caring man with a huge heart and helped anyone in need. Sam loved all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren unconditionally. Sam had a special love and bond for his wife Lereese.
Sam enjoyed his bass tournaments and fishing with the family. He won many trophies from his bowling leagues. He also enjoyed golfing and in his later years, he Marshalled for several golf courses. Sam was very passionate about sports, especially the Texas A&M Aggies football team, never missing a televised game.
Preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lereese and his daughter-in-law Kelli.
Sam is survived by his children Marilyn and husband Greg, their daughter Rachel and her children Trent and Bryson, and their son Jacob; Larry Dale and his daughter Melissa; David and wife Linda; Brett and wife Sandra and his children, Kelley and girlfriend Schuyler and their daughter Iris; Tiffany and boyfriend Corey and her children Jordyn, Malaya, Kylan and Athena; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
A double funeral service will be held at Forest Park Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77077 on February 1st, 2021 at 10am visitation in the chapel followed by an immediate graveside service at 11am.
