Ruth Red was born on July 10, 1917 in Humble, Texas and went home to be with our Lord on March 6, 2011. She was a life-long resident of Houston and member of First Presbyterian Church, Houston. Mrs. Red was a graduate of San Jacinto High School (1934), Rice Institute (Bachelor of Arts-1938), and University of Houston (Master of Arts-1947, with emphasis in music education and supervision). She undertook additional studies at the Julliard School of Music, the University of Colorado, and the University of Toronto. Mrs. Red was a gifted pianist and organist. In 1941, she married W. Scott Red, a prominent Houston attorney; and remained married to her beloved husband until his death in 1990. Mrs. Red taught music at Lanier Junior High School; accompanied the chorus at the Harris County Mary Burnett School for girls; was promoted to Music Supervisor for HISD in 1955; and was then promoted to Director of Music Education for HISD in 1966 and served until her retirement in 1985. Mrs. Red was instrumental in the establishment of, and received national recognition for the music program for the HSPVA. She served as a supply organist at the First Presbyterian Church, Houston, and served as organist at many other Houston churches. She served on the Boards of the Miller Outdoor Theater, Houston Symphony Society, Houston Grand Opera, Young Audiences of Houston, and the Houston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She held offices in many state and national educator organizations, including the Music Educators' National Conference.
Mrs. Red is survived by her sons, W.Scott Red Jr. and his wife Darla-Rae, Samuel C. Red III and his wife Misty Dawn, as well as, numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
