Ruth Cooper, 89, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, went to be with the Lord peacefully at her home with her children by her side on Monday, June 16, 2014 following a brave battle with strokes and congestive heart failure. She will be missed by her daughters Jan and husband Dave Hoffman of Muscatine, Iowa; Judi and husband Keith Coleman of Houston, Texas; and son Greg Cooper and wife Megan of Houston, Texas. She will also be missed by her loving grandchildren Becky and Matthew Hoffman, Rachel Coleman, and Makenna, William, Bonnie, and Jeremiah Cooper, many nieces and nephews, as well as many special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Cooper, Jr.; her parents Sidney and Lula Hodge; sisters Dolores Angove, Norma Denman, Rosalie House; and brother Captain Ted Hodge.
Ruth was born February 28, 1925 in Leadwood, Missouri. After graduating from Leadwood High School, Ruth worked at various jobs before marrying Jerry in 1949. They moved to Houston in 1955 and began a family in 1960 which began many happy years spent as a homemaker, wife and mother.
Ruth had many interests that kept her busy. Her first love was her Lord followed closely by her family and friends. She was always very involved in her children's activities as well as in her church, neighborhood organizations, PTA, and countless volunteer activities. She enjoyed working around her home and in her garden, and she loved to share her home by entertaining friends and family there. She especially loved having the home open as a place for her children's friends to hang out, and both her children and their friends have many happy memories there. She also enjoyed playing games with her family, sewing, doing arts and crafts, cooking, decorating, traveling on some wonderful family vacations, going for drives in the country - especially to look at wildflowers, and shopping at antique and craft stores. Ruth and Jerry spent many happy years square-dancing and line-dancing, and they shared many crazy adventures and wonderful times with the special friends they made in the Hey Lollies and other groups. They also cherished the friends they made through their membership at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, and later at Second Baptist Church. For the last few years, she has called Holly Hall her home, and she made many special friends there. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sarah Selleck and her staff, as well as the staff at Holly Hall, for their excellent care over the last four years. We will all miss Ruth's contagious laugh and ready smile, but we rejoice in knowing that she is at peace in the presence of her Lord.
Visitation with the family was held from 11:00 until 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Waltrip Funeral Directors. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Waltrip Funeral Directors with interment following at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Operation Smile or Samaritan's Purse.
