Ruby was born on January 22, 1929 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Her parents were Beulah Estelle (Mouchette) and Emery Brankley Pruitt. She had one sister, Lenora, who was two and a half years older. When Ruby was born her mother told sister, Lenora, this is your new buddy and ever after Ruby was known as “Buddy” within the family.
Ruby’s father was a master carpenter who built custom cabinets, cornice boards, desks and bookshelves for high end homes. Because of his trade the family followed the building industry and moved frequently between Alabama, Florida and Georgia.
In 1948 the entire family, father, mother, sister, brother-in-law Bill Tarnow and Ruby traveled to California to seek their fortune. Not finding what they sought, they packed up and headed back to Alabama. On the way they stopped in Houston and the rest is history.
Everyone liked Houston. They all found jobs and decided to stay.
It wasn’t long before Ruby met her third husband, Eddie Moone. They were married for five years, divorced for five and remarried for twelve. Eddie was career Navy and Ruby lived with him in Charleston, South Carolina and Myrtle Beach, Virginia as well as Houston. After their divorce Ruby lived in the Houston area for the rest of her life.
Ruby enjoyed baking, sewing, and crocheting. She also enjoyed tennis, horseback riding, fishing, camping and dancing.
Every June the whole family rented a cottage on Santa Rosa Island in Florida and went deep sea fishing. In the fall there were camping trips to Colorado, the Smokey Mountains and Garner State Park in Texas.
Ruby loved to travel. She traveled many times with her sister and brother-in-law to Europe and to Egypt and China. She even made a daring trip to Hong Kong on her own.
When her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Ruby moved in with sister Lenora to help care for their mother. The sisters became inseparable, and they lived together for 35 years.
Lenora’s husband, Bill, claimed to be the happiest man alive. He said he had one woman who loved to cook and another who loved to bake.
In Ruby’s later years she also suffered from Alzheimer’s and was cared for by her sister as well as her niece, Gayle. Her last four years were spent at Morada Senior Living in Friendswood where she was well cared for and will be missed.
Ruby is survived by her niece, Gayle Jircik, and her husband David, grandniece Heather Buckley and her husband Tom, grandniece Rachel Inman, and a great-grandniece, Abigail Inman.
A visitation for Ruby will be held Sunday, April 3, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077, followed by a committal service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
