Ruben Martinez

Ruben (Jirafa) G. Martinez Sr., 76, of Houston, Texas, peacefully passed away on Tuesday August 4, 2015 with his loving family by his side. Ruben graduated from Milby High School where he excelled as a basketball star and was selected to the 1957 all-city basketball team, he continued his education and basketball at Wharton Junior College. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

Ruben is survived by his loving wife for 55 years, Dora B. Martinez, daughter Rhonda M. Ganyo, son Ruben G. Martinez Jr., son-in-law Mark Ganyo, daughter-in-law Michelle M. Martinez, his grandchildren Michelle T. Ganyo, Christopher R. Ganyo, Sophia M. Martinez, Olivia C. Martinez, brother Ramiro Martinez, sisters Aurora Martinez and Irene Porcarello and numerous other living relatives and friends that he deeply adored with tremendous love.

Ruben held several position throughout his working career but dedicated most of his time with Continental Airlines for 38 years. After retirement Ruben never gave up his love of sports especially basketball and football. He loved spending time with all his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren. Ruben was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He touched so many lives and will deeply missed by all.

Visitation will be held from 5-9pm, with a rosary at 7pm on Friday, August 7, 2015. Funeral service will begin at 10 am on Saturday, August 8, 2015 with interment immediately following. All services will take place at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home.
