I have been a golfing friend of Roy for more than 30 years.  We often played with Pastor Black and Lee Lefforge.  Many happy times were spent at Gus Wortham G.C.  One moment I remember was Roy teeing off on number nine.  He hit one of his long, high shots into a big oak tree next to the green.  The ball hit in a sand trap next to the green, bounced through the trap and rolled onto the green about three feet from the pin.  After I parred the hole, Roy calmly knocked in his putt for an eagle two! I had my best round playing Roy. He shot a 79, but that day I beat him by ten and had a 69.  He never forgot that round.  Roy's clubs were McGregor irons with a copper face on the clubhead.  Roy had grips on those clubs that wore down to a point that the medal shaft could be seen.  Roy never replaced those clubs or grips. They felt good to him and he wasn't about to change.  Roy worshiped at Trinity Lutheran Downtown regularly on Monday evenings.  I was the pianist for those services.  It was always good to see Roy, his wife Cindy, and sister Sally at those services.  We haven't golfed for a few years, but I have always enjoyed talking golf with Roy on the phone.  He was always interested in my boys who played golf, the latest tournament, Tiger Woods or Freddy Couples.  Roy is enjoying his heavenly home because of his faith in Jesus Christ his Lord.  I look forward to sitting with him in heaven someday.

Roy and I have been golfing friends for over 30  years.  I'd love to go out and be the first ones on the tee at Gus Wortham on  Monday mornings. Lee Lefforge and Pastor Black would be a part of our foursome.  Roy's clubs were some old McGregor Tourneys with a copper face on the club head.  His grips were so worn that his thumb wore through to the medal shaft.  But Roy refused to get new grips for his obsolete set. However, Roy was a master with those clubs and his iron shots were usually right on the pin.  Our matches would go down to the final shots.  My best memory of Roy was a long drive he had on the nineth tee.  It soared into the heavens but crashed into an old oak tree next to the green.  I thought my win was secure, but the ball hit that tree, bounced through a sand trap next to the green, and rolled to three feet from the pin.  I parred the hole, but Roy tapped in his putt for an eagle two on 
that hole, and proceeded to win the match.  My most memorable match with Roy was when he shot a 79 against me after I shot a career best 69.  Roy never forgot that his good score was topped that day by his old golfing friend.  Roy was always a delight to be around.  He regularly attended a Monday night worship service at Trinity Lutheran Downtown with his dear wife Cindy.  Roy and I no longer played golf in the past few years.  But regular phone calls always were shared about the latest tournament, Tiger Woods or Freddy Couples. I will miss those phone calls with Roy.  Heaven is a better place because Roy is there.

I knew Roy from a friend that I worked with about 15 years ago. I was living in Detroit, MI and a former boss invited me to Houston to flounder fish. I thought, flounder? But I went not expecting much because I really wanted to spend some time with my old boss and mentor. On the way I experienced my first ever Whataburger, wow as we drove to some place called Bolivar Peninsula having to cross over on a ferry. Well, we arrived where I met his brother who had a cabin down there. Later in the evening an older gentleman drove up in an old truck and his name was Roy. Very much a gentleman. I learned over the next several years that he was a legend in the flounder fishing community. Forgot more than most will ever know. How he would even talk to a young whippersnapper like me is unknown to this day. Besides the love of fishing we had one big thing in common, love of cigars while smoking. I would always bring him some. I would hand them over he would look side to side to make sure his wife wouldnt see and put them in his pocket. He would nurse them to the nub. I remember more than once as he and Mrs. were sitting in their boat as we walked pass on the jetty to our spot, I would stop and throw him 5 or so out to the boat. If one went in the water he would net it out with a big grin. He taught me a lot about carrying yourself as a man, being soft spoken, caring and friendly. I am sure he never met a stranger. I am sure I will not be the only one to miss him and this year's run will be dedicated to him and his memory. I will smoke a favorite in his honor. May God Bless and keep him.
